More Employers To Pay Jobless Tax More Workers Under Unemployment Act Hundreds of employers wiil come under provisions of the Indiana unemployment insurance act this year for the first time, William C. Stalnaker, director of the Indiana employment security division, reminded. Amended coverage provisions of the law make employers who have four or more employes Hable for the pay roll tax where, previously, only those with eight or more employes were covered, he explained. Stalnaker estimates that some 17.000 additional employers will be added to the 18.500 already covered. Newcomers will include firms and companies who had four or more employes for at least one day in any 20 weeks last year or this. Their liability for the tax began on January 1 this year and they will make their first tax payments to the division in April following the cdese of the first quarter of 1956. Approximately 90,000 jobs are expected to gain unemployment insurance protection in coming months through the coverage expansion. Up to now, under *the eight or more employe provision about one million people in Indiana have been working in covered employment. Because of the base period earnings requirement in the law, newly covered workers did not become eligible for benefits January 1 when their employers became subject to the tax, Stalnaker said. He explained that July 1 this year will be the earliest date that any claims can be accepted from persons who, before they lost their jobs, were working for these smaller employers. Farms Lost LINCOLN, Neb. (INS) — An agriculture census shows Nebraska has “lost” 6,300 farms since 1950. The University of Nebraska Agricultural Extension Service said the decline was tpainly among farms of less than 200 acres. • ♦ Hope Raised WASHINGTON (INS) — Cape Good Hope, despite popular belief, is not the southernmost tip of Africa. That distinction, says the National Geographic Society, goes to Cape Agulhas to the southeast, ; which is 33 miles nearer the South I Pole.
