Senator Warns Os Dangers Os Soviet Missile Says Missile Could Destroy Advanced Airbases Os U. S. WASHINGTON (INS) — Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D. Wash.), warned today that "before the end of this year” Russia probably will tire a 1.500-mlle range ballistic missile that could destroy advanced U.S. airbases overseas. Jackson told an American Legton meeting on national security that "mere possession of this weapon will permit the Kremlin to blackmail our allies within its range into neutrality or worse." Jackson, a member of the senate armed services committee, said such a ballistic missile would bear the same relation to conventional missiles as atomic or hydrogen firepower bears to convention TNT. He declared: “Ballistic missiles travel high In the stratosphere at 10 or 20 times the speed of sound. In 20 or 30 minutes, a missile of intercontinental range could fly from Russian bases to the American heartland.” Jackson compared this with the conventional guided missiles which travel at relatively low speed and altitudes and can be met by a defense with “comparative ease.” He told the Legion meeting: •“Our military and scientific race With the Soviets now centers on the achievement of the intercontinental ballistic missile. winning thia contort, the Rubblmb hbpo to dertroy the thesis that the United States 1* the industrial and technical colo»»u» of the. world; "We face the very real danger that they may be able to do Just this. Such an achievement would not only terminate what some call the ‘air-atomic* stalemate, it would also shift the military balance to the Communists." Predicting that the Russians •probably" will fire an “intermediate” ballistic missile, Jackson said: “Before the year's end. the device of ballistic blackmail may be added to the Soviet arsenal of conquest." Jackson added: “Our philosophy of defense must be changed to meet this challenge. “The antiquated statement that we can only increase out efforts in case of war must be burled. The sense or urgency which we now lack may be with us then—but the time and the production facilities will not. Th an all-out atom-ic-hydrogen war our industrial might would be consigned to a nuclear graveyard. Today, we can prepare for war only in time of peace.” RELIEF AT LAST ForYour COUGH It a common cold left you with a cough that ha* hung on for days and days act quick. It is dangerous to delay.
