Governor George N. Craig, and Ira Huntington, Jasper county superintendent of schools. The jurors were in session almost a week probing a charge by Albert J. Wedeking, executive db rector of the toll road commission, that stat* auditor Curtis Rardin solicited a bribe to vote for transfer of <67,000 from state highway department funds to the toll road commission. The money was to be used io finance a survey of the proposed north-south pay highway. At that time Rardin. as a member of the state finance board, had the deciding vote "bn the transfer. Os the two other members, the governor favored the transfer and state treasurer John Peters was against it. Sayer is a confidante of the governor and also has sold large orders of supplies to both the state ind th Marion county. He also helped make Craig Governor. Hunttngtoh apparently was associated with (Rardin in Rensselaer when the latte* was Jasper county
auditor. Tinder said the county probably will have to pay Sayer's expenses. He now is in Sebring. Fla., where he, the governor gnd Elmer Sherwood, another associate of Craig, have real estate holdings. The governor is headed for Florida by train today. Most of. Indiana's politically great among the Republicans already have testified before the Jury. Included were the governor, Wedeking, state treasurer Peters, secretary of state Crawford F. Parker, Meut. Gov. Harold W. Handley, state police superintendent Frank Jessup and ufiderlings. Senators William E. Jenner and Homer E. Capehart were conspicuous by their absences. Prosecutor Tinder, at .the request of the jurors, will again invite Rardin to testify. He has refused to do so to date, on advice •of his Democratic attorney, David Lewis, of Indianapolis. -Tinder announced that a special report on the probe will be returned by the jurors when the investigation is ended.

NEW YORK (INS) — Two of the nation’s industrial giants announced Monday billion dollar expansion programs for the steel Industry and for General Motors. The announcements by Benjamin F. Fairless, president of the Iron and Steel Institute, and Harlow H. Curtice, president of General Motors, said the moves were based on confidence in the future of the American economy. Fairless said steel companies plan to spend $3 billion in the next three years for expansion while Curtice said GM win lay out $1 billion this year in capital expenditures. He explained, however, that he could not disclose what the over-all pfogram would mean to individual firms. Fairless said in 1956 alone the steel companies would spend $1.2 billion on expansion programs “which are widespread throughout the industry.” Speaking at a news conference W former head of U. S. ®equate Indiana Roads In Spotlight State Legislative Commission Meets INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — Indiana’s inadequate highway system was in the spotlight today. It was the chief topic at a meeting of the state legislative, advisory commission and it was discussed in “Indiana’s economic resources potential” a survey made by thp Indiana University school of business at the request of Governor George N. Craig. The 1. U. report predicted that the number of motor vehicles on Indiana ifighways will rise at Ipast a million to a total of 2,820,000 by 1970. One-fifth of the total will be trucks. It will cost from four to six times the funds now available to provide adequate roads for this traffic increase. Addressing the advisory commission today, Lieut. Gov. Harold W. Handley warned that the 1957 general assembly must expand its roads system or the state will become “engulfed in a flood of bumper-to-bumper- traffic jams." Handley added“We must continue to expand and maintain our free highway* system in every part of the state. 'We must build a border-to-border system of modem, wide, divided four-lane highways that will give Hoosier motorists the • facilities they demand and deserve.” Neighboring states are spending many millions more for road building than Indiana, according to Handley. h ’ ; Handley said Illinois will spend at least $127 million this year, Ohio at least $260 million and Kentucky is planning a special session of its legislature to map a $206 million highway program. In contrast, Indiana is spending only $36.5 million. Slapping at federal controls and toll roads, Handley said: “I sincerely belieye that Indiana has the imagination, the ingenuity and the capacity to develop its own free highway system, without surrendering control of our roads to Washington and without letting our free highway system decline while our citizens are compelled to pay tolls on a network of privately financed roads.” The I. U- report predicted that Indiana's airplane traffic will more than double in the next 15 years and that railroads will remain important to the state’s economy. The St. Lawrence waterway and improvement of the Ohio river will also increase the importance of water traffic. ■ . IKE TO HOLD (Continued from Paa. Oner Eisenhower, said today that he still had nothing to say on the subject. Hoover said after his talk with Mr- Eisenhower that there has been a misunderstanding in the press over a recent letter written by presidential aide Sherman Adams. Adams indicated the White House was not particularly enthusiastic about Hoover’s suggestion fbr a new post of administrative vice president, but would not object to it. The press, Hoover said, gave the erroneous impression that Adams, was indicating the Job of lightening the burden of the presidency has been completed. He said: “My contention Is that they’ve only begun ” The ex-Presidwst , sai< there would be some “important” announcements by the White House
