Suggest White House Be Made Into Museum White House Aides Suggest Brand New Government Office WASHINGTON (INS) -Some q(, IPres*dent Bit»e>nhower's advisers believe the White House should be abandoned as an office fol- conducting the nation'* business and turned into a national museum. The President's office — under the startling proposal — and his entire executive establishment would be moved from the oentury-and-a-hold-old mansion and housed in a new, modern government office building. / The White House itself, with its acres of lawns, fountain* and flower beds, would become a presidential museum and national shrine as is Mount Vernon, home of George Washington. .MQWctal proposal which has been discussed by some presidential associates, would call for demolition of the two small and crowded executive wings. Thus the White House would be restored to its original architectural plan The mansion and grounds would then be opened entirely to the public on a year-around basis. The President and first lady, instead of residing as now in quarters on the second floor where they have scant privacy, could have a home of their own elsewhere. Historic rooms such as the East ballroom, tlie Red, Green and Blue rooms, and the state dining room, could still be used by the President fpr high state functions, and for entertaining visiting high-rank-ing foreign dignitaries. The idea has grown out of what Presidential aides say is a crying need for larger quarters tor the executive business establishment Mr. Eisenhower, without taking official cognisance of the proposal, is understood to have agreed that the housing of the sprawling executive establishment under a single roof would "improve the efficiency" of his office. In the executive mansion itself, there is little room tor the President's official family. The West wing is occupied by the President,, his three secretaries and legal counsel, and ’a few clerks. The rest of the executive offices, including presidential admlnistrfc-

live assistants, the White House mall room, the budget bureau, national security council, foreign economic council, office of disarmament, and a host of others, are in the old state building. Aides said the PresidentT own offices are so crowded that, when spaoe was needed recently for a small -room where the President could take a midday nap in conformance with his doctors' orders, it had to be carved out of the office of his appointments secretary. Discussing the suggestion that the White House be made into a museum and national shrine, one official remarked: "It's practically a museum now. We have nearly a million visitors a year who come from ail over the nation to see the White House. When the White House is open to the public,, members of the President's family have to stay on the second floor if they want privacy." Two floors of the White House are open to the public two hours of the morning, five days a week So many visitors trooped though the historic state rooms in the three years since the White House was rebuilt that the mansion had to be closed last summer for reparis to the floors and walls.
