Li7 Leaguer 1 i I 1 1 I 1 * II Al M Test Antibiotic . Sprays For Crops Experiments Used , On Crop Diseases 1 WASHINGTON (INS) — Agri- ; culture department scientists report that antibiotic sprays have been used experimentally to con--1 trol diseases in a wide new variety ■ of crops. 1 In one series of tests, two dis--1 eases important to vegetable growers—downy mildew of Um* beans and late blight of tomatoes—have been dealt with successfully with streptomycin sprays. ' Latest developments in the field were reported by agricultural research service personnel today at the annual meeting of the American phytopathological society in 'ln addition to the work with lima beans and tomatoes, these other new advances were cited: 1. Bacterial leaf spot, a destructive disease of sesame, has been successfully controlled with antibiotic streptomycin. Practical control of sesame blight would be an important step toward development of a new oilseed crop in the U.S. 2. Scab disease, which costs the American pecan industry millions of dollars a year in' reduced nut yields, has been successfully controlled with a combination chemical spray program. .3 It has been discovered that rose fanciers can get more and bigger early blooms by sticking to a regular year-in and year-out blackspot control program. In working with lima beans, the scientists have made the significant discovery that better control of the fungus can be obtained with crude forms of streptomycin than with pure forms. They also learned that addition of coft>er to the antibiotic sprays give very effective disease control with very low dosages of antibiotic. The department says these discoveries extend the list of recent research successes in using antibiotics against plant diseases and are a further important step toward more extensive use of antibiotics for more efficient plant production. CONGRESSMEN (Continued From Page One) tacked the United States, Great Britain and other western nations. “The two Russian leaders pretty well shattered what remained of the Geneva spirit while they were there. Every American should be proud that we have a President who is interested in liberty and freedom for individuals In every part of the world.” Trade in a Good Town — Decatut
DEMAND GOP (Continued From Page One) get director (Rowland R. Hughes: “If the administration wishes to exercise any leadership in this matter, or even if it wishes its proposals to be considered, the opportunity for doing so may soon be gone. I want to make it clear that if this occurs, it will not be by reason of any neglect, or unwillingness, on the part of this ] committee.” IKE DECLINES (Continued from Page One) sport shirt department. For his outing he wore khakicolored trousers and sweater, with a conservative blue sport shirt that was in sharp contrast to the gaudy creations favored ] by Mr. Truman during his Key West sojourns. 1 The president’s brother, Dr. Milton Eisenhower, gave promise, however, of carrying on the Truman tradition. Ho wore white shorts, a bright purple sport shirt ] and beach shoes, as he accompanied the President on his walk.
