rCreame<lSl L LessonflgH Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson. The Peris of.lnsincerity, Luke 1K29-44, for Sunday. January 1. X>y Rev. D. Carl, Yoder. / } Stern opposition,- by the Pharisees was now growing; they eyen accused Jesus of being linked with ■ Blezebub. Jesus now took his ; stand and showed their insincer-, ity. Without sincerity, there can be no progress in the Christian life, V. 29. “And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say. This is an evil generation; they seek a sign; and there shall be no sign given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.” The many miracles of Jesus and his good deeds were sign enough to sincere and honest minds. Jesus’ enemies had perverted minds. V 30. “For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninevltes. so shall the Son ,of man be to this generation." Jonas did not use a sign: he preached repentance which produced results. V. 31. "The queen of the south shall rise in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear 4he wisdom of Solomon; and behold. a greater than Solomon is here." The wise sayings were heralded abroad and commanded re- 1 sped; Solomon did nothing that might have been a sign. His spoken word was enough. There is but one conclusion, namely, that all men should heed Jesus’ Wise words of repentance. The spectacular cheapens religion. V. 32. “The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment, with this generation and shall condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and behold, a greater than Jonas is here.” The people of Nineveh were despised by the ■ Jews but Christ commended them because they repented; this fact Ought to have produced conviction; besides. there were pbesented truths ot the kinbdom of God . which are most fundamental. V.33.' “No man when he hath lighted a candle putteth it in a sec- j ret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candle stick that they ; which come in may see the light.” Fourteen major denominations in the United States and Canada wijl carry on this winter and during 1956 a campaign to raise sl,882,000 for additional dormitories and other building facilities for the International Christian University, located in Tokyq, Japan. »• — Navy chaplains conducted 213.011 worship services and Bible study sessions during the past year with a combined attendance of 11.776.490. This was an increase of more than 700.000 over the previous year’s attendance, the Navy report said. iAs a lamp shines forth, so also should people shine for Christ. V«34. "The light-nf the body is th 4 e eye; thereforeijwbeu thine eye is'single, thy whq)e body is full of light; but when.Ahine eye is evil, the whole' body is full ot darkness." The eye is mail’s understanding. In the case of the Pharisees. their mind was perverted. Caution is needed see next .verse. I ■ * V. 86. "If thy whole body, therefore, be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full j of light as when the bright shining of the candle doth give thee , light." This is our gracious privilege that we open our hearts to the Lord. V. 37. “And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him; and he went in and sat down to meat." Here was a’ chance for a fuller revelation. V. 37 "And when th<* Pharisee saw it. he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner." Jesus had not gone through the prescribed ceremonial. V. 39. "And the Lord said unto him. Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside ot the cup and platter; but your inward part is fyll of ravening and wickedness." Since food is placed within the cup. it ought to tee even cleaner than the outside. There is a spiritual implication here. V. 40. "Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?" God who had made our physical bodies made also our souls. V. 41. "But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and behold. all things are clean unto you.” This verse is differently explained as it is rather vague. To say the least, a clean life is necessary'. V. 42. "But woe unto you. Pharisees. for ye tithe mint anda rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God; these ye ought to have done, and not leave the other undone.” While tithing is right, the justice and love of God are most important. V 5.43.44. Here two specific woes, wre pronounced; the first, that of self importance, and the second. , that ot Inward corruption. These 1 were .results of insincerity. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the division of Christian Education. But one day in the year is not good enough, for every day calls for a recognition of the birth of Christ. It is good to sing Christmas carols, but that is not good enough: every day ought to be a time of singing. "Joy to the world, the Lord has come . . It is good to have a family day filled with expressions of love in kindly greetings and in exchange of gifts; but that is not enough, for every day ought to be just, such a family day.
