United Stales Steel Planning Expansion , Company Announces < Production Boost CHICAGO (INS)—United States i Steel Corp., announced today an < Sxpanaiou program to booat its production capacity in the Chicago ’ area and Utah. < Board Chairman Roger M. 1 Blough said the program will add 1 2,500,000 tons of ingota to yearly ' production as well as increases in finished products. He said it is planned to raise steel capacity in the Chicago area , by about 1,500,000 tons. The present! . capacity is 5,470,000 tons at the , South Chicago plant and 7,717,000 ] tons at the Gary, Ind., works. Blough also said that expansion at Geneva, Utah, already nnder way. will bring the capacity of the Columbia-Geneva division to about 2,260,000 tons, an increase of 20 per cent. He added: “The program of expansion Is designed to keep pace with the needs of our customers and is based on the recognition by U. S. Steel that future requirements of the country’s growing economy clearly indicate a need for increased steel production.” A Chicago spokesman for the company said the program includes improved open hearth melting practices, improvements of methods used in the soaking pits, handling of materials and other steps in the steelmaking process. Christmas Services | At Presbyterian Church The annual Sunday school-church Christmas program of the Presbyterian church will be held at 7:30 o'clock this evening at the church. Miss Ina Noaok is chairman of the program, which will tell the Christmas story as told, sung and portrayed by the youth. The annual candlelight service will be held at 11 p. m. Saturday, Christmas eve, with the Christmas < message told in word and song, and finally depicted in the service of candle-lighting at the mtidnight hour. *.- There will be no Sunday school Sunday. Instead, famlies of the church will gather for a family worship service at 10:30 a. m. During Jlrfs service, the famlliee will sing the carols and hear the Christmas message by the pastor. The sacrament of baptism will be administered during this hour. Auditor Seeking To Recover $200,000 Alleges State Fund Illegally Diverted INDIANAPOLIS —State auditor Curtis E. Rardin, who recently broke his alliance with Governor George N. Oraig, today attempted to recover >200,000 allegedly diverted illegally from the state general fund last summer by the board of finance. The money was transferred to the warehouse revolving fund of William E. Clarkson, director ..of the department of public works and supply, a few hours before It would have reverted to the general fund. Clarkson now seeks diversion of >IOO,OOO more. He is a former chauffeur for the governor. He claims the diversion will permit him to buy supplies In larger quantities, thereby saving the state much money. Christmas Program At Pleasant Dale Give Early Program On Christmas Day The young people of the Pleasant Dale Church of the Brethren will present an early Christinas Day program at the church Sunday mftrning at 7:30 o’clock. It will be a short program depicting the birth of Christ and His fulfillment ,as God's Son who brought light into ’ a world of darkness. Children's Services At Lutheran Church Two children’s Christmas' services will be conducted again this year 'at Zion Lutheran church, West Monroe Street, Friday and Saturday nights, to better accomodate both ' the children and the adult worshippers. The children of grades thijee through eight, the junior, intermediate, and senior departments of trfe Sunday school, will hold their service Friday evening at 8 o’clock. “Our Wonderful Redeemer’’ is the title of the service in which the children will bring the message of the Savior Jesus Christ In recitation and Christmas carols. Superintendents Bill Gernand and Paul Busse, and the pastor, the Rev. Edgar P. Schmidt, will lead the service. Teachers of the 100 children of these departments are: Mrs. George Rentz, Karl Reinking, Richard Mailand, Mrs. Nelson Doty, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Kleinknight, Mrs. William Justice, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bieberich The Christmas service of the younger children, nursery, beginner, and primary departments of the Sunday school, will be conducted Sajrrrday evening, Christmas Eve, ato’clock A feature of this service will be a robed choir composed of 40 children of the primary department. (INS) —Democratic State Senator Eugene Bainbridge, of Munster, today considered the draft of a bill banning crime-sex comic books in Indiana, prepared by Lake county prosecutor Metro Holovachka. The Gary city council has just adopted an ordinance banning sale of such literature in Gary. Similar ordinances have been passed in Hammond, East Chicago, Hobart and Whiting.
