Decatur Commodores Wallop Jefferson By 84-49 Score Tuesday

The Decatur Commodores rolled to their eighth victory of the teaeon Tuesday night, outclassing the Jefferson Warriors, 84-4 s, at the Decatur gym. Phil Hammitt drew first blood, hitting for the Warriors on the first shot of the game, but Ron Meyer evened the count at 2-2 on a Qalr of free throws after 30 seconds of pity. All the Commodores starters got into the scoring act in the first quarter as the Decatur boys raced to a big 18-6 bulge as the period closed. The Commodores boosted their lead to 20 points at 28-8 after two and one-half minutes of the second quarter, and the Warriors, unable to bit at ail well when they gained control, of the ball, were down by 16 points at the haH. 36-20. The Warriors never made a serious threat and tbe Commodores, with Coach Dave Terveer making frequent shifts in his lineup, increased their margin to 19 points. 65-36, as the two teams moved?into the final eight minutes of play. The Decatur lads poured 29 more points through the nets in the final quarter to chalk np their 36point triumph in the closing game of 1955 for both quintets. The Commodores had four lads in double figunea, Ron Mieyer leading with 19 points. Don Newcombe Signs Brooklyn Contract NEW YORK (INS) — Big Don Newcombe, who threatened to become a holdout for $30,000, has signed his 1956 contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers for a reported $25,000’. The 6-foot-4, 28-year-old righthander, who the world champions last season, settled Tuesday for an increase of about $7,500. \ Sparfans Lose To Petroleum In Overtime The Pteaisamt Millts Spartans dropped a heart breaker in their cloeing game of 1955 Tuesday night, as the Petroleum Panthers edged out the Spartans, 72-70, after an overtime battle at the Pleasant Mills gym. The Spartans held a 2047 advantage at the first quarter, but the Wells county quintet moved to a 35-28 lead at the half. The Spartans bounced right back in the third quarter to take a 55-51 bulge but tbe Panthers tied the score at 67-67 in the closing seconds of the regular playing time and went on to win in the extra session. That ominous question may be decided by how you drive this coming weekend. Unless you exercise caution at the wheel of your car, you may be among the 560 persons the national safety council estimated today would die in traffic accidents during the Yuletide holiday. The council warned that figures show Dec. 24 is usually the most deadly day of the year on the nation’s highways because of heavy travel to family gatherings and Christmas Eve festivities. Adams Central Defeats Ossian Tuesday Night The Adams Central Greyhounds ’ closed out the 1955 portion of their schedule on a pleasing note Tuesday night, racking up their third victory of the season by defeating the Ossian Bears, 57-46, at the Adams Central gym. The Greyhounds were out in front all the way, 13-8 at the first quarter, 30-20 at the half and 4335 at the third period. Adams Central used only five players, Jim Steiner leading the scoring with 16 points. Gary MoMillen and Ronald Corson each scored 13, Ken Baumgartner 10 and Jerry Mitchel five. Gonzales In Fourth Win Over Trabert OAKLAND, Calif. (INS) — National pro tennis champion Pancho Gonzales scored his fpurth victory over former amateur king Tony Trabert Tuesday night before a crowd of 2,500 fans at Oakland auditorium. Jackets Play Elmhurst In Meet Opener The Decatur Yellow Jackets will meet the Elmhurst Trojans at 7 o’clock Tuesday, Dec. 27, In the opening game of the holiday tourney at the new Elmhurst gym. The draw for the tourney, announced Tuesday, sends Fort Wayne Concordia against Fort Wayne Central Catholic in the second game Tuesday night at 8:15 o’clock. Losers of the Tuesday night games will tangle in the consolation tilt at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the championship game between the Tuesday night winners. Season tickets for the holiday tourney, good for both sessions, are priced at $1.50.
