Farm Production Near 1948 Record Near Mark Despite Decreased Acreage WASHINGTON (INS) — Total farm production this year will be about equal the record net tn 1948 despite the fact that planted acreage was the smallest since 194 ft In Its December crop report, the agriculture department said new high yields were obtained in oats, soybeans, hay, alfalfa, seed, sorghum silage and oranges. Second largest crops on record weTe set for barley, sorghum grain and rice. Above-average yields wsre realized in corn, flaxseed, sorghum forage, cotton and cottonseed, sugar beets, dry beans, rye, sweet clover seed, lespedeza seed, broom corn, grapes, cherries, apricots, avocados, lemons, cranberries and walnuts. The 1955 wheat crop, both winter and spring, fell nearly one-fifth below average and was the smallest in 12 years due to the government's acreage allotment and heavy drought losses. Other crops below- average were dry peas, cowpeas, sweet potatoes, buckwheat, sugar cane syrup, peaches, pecans and tung nuts. The 355 million acres of crops planted this year were a half million acres less than in 1954 and 3,400,090 acres—about one per cent —below average for the past 10 years. The 1 board said an “unusnal number of crops" made record yields per acre. COMMISSIONERS (Continued From Page One) Kintt, and county auditor Frank Kitson, who serves as secretary of the board, attended the Monday session. CONVENTION * (Continued from Fu* Qss) Election of officers was scheduled for late this afternoon, to be followed by adjournment

KEY SCIENTISTS (Continued From Page One) the U.S. Warheads of the intercontinental missiles will be smaller and will strike with less accuracy than those delivered by manned bombers, according to this estimate. But the missiles’ great speeds I would reduce warning time to a ( tew minutes. j The report, represented as a "rational basis for making decisions” rather than a prediction of attack, also makes these points: ’ 1. Because of thejwpld developr meat of the ICBM, It is necessary • to start soon the planning and construction of shelters that will be . needed when there wil be very • little warning time. 2. Meanwhile, warning systems, evacuation plans and "perimeter” shelters provide some immediate protection and help prepare for the ara of the ICBM. Deep, wel-stock ( ed shelters able to withstand anything but a direct nuclear hit, are I estimated to cost 1300 per person, whereas "perimeter” shelters can be built for S2O per person. i 3. Food and water supplies in • shelters should be sufficient for a r week. In the more elaborate types, • "artificial atmosphere” oxygen sufficient for a week should also s be included. Even some World War . tl bomb attacks and subsequent . fires exhausted the oxygen from the atmosphere. • 4. The dangers of “detection or • defection” make it unlikely that • saboteurs would be used to delivl er atomic weapons. More attention ' should be. paid to the danger of 1 submarine-launched missiles that • could reach cities and many U.S. strategic air command bases. 5. Subsequent nuclear attacks may be expected to be less successful than the first ones. However, it is probable that a nuclear t war would be fought with the ma f terials at hand because “there will • be a greatly reduced chance of recovering production before the war is over.” If you have something to sell or s rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad.
