Westinghouse Co. Distributes Loans SIOO Loan To Each Os Striking Workers - PITTSBVRCL (INS) — Distribution of |IOO loans is underway |J “ at* many of the 30 Westinghouse plants which have been closed by a strike of some 54,000 workers. Payment of the checks by the ( company will not begin, however, at the huge East Pittsburgh plant until tomorrow. Some 10,000 members of the CIO-AFL International Union of Electrical workers are employed there. Another 34,000 work at 28 other plants. United Electrical Workers who hold bargaining rights at 10 plants. The lUE workers have been off the job since last Oct. 17 in an effort to win a 15-cents hourly pay increase. Westinghouse came up with Its surprise proposal to lend each striker the maximum of JIOO last Friday to provide them with som<, Christmas cheer. The offer also includes employes who have been furloughed the last 30 days because of a lack of work. Distributing the loans begins today and continues through Wednesday at the Sharon, Pa., transformer plant. Local 601 of the IUE had objected previously! to employes at the East Pittsburgh works erasing the picket line to pick up the loan. But the local withdrew' its objection after the company explained that each worker would have to
