Decatur Commodores Whip Marion Bennett; Elwood Beats Jackets

COMMODORES The Decatur Commodores registered their seventh triumph of the season Friday night, whipping Marion Bennett, 80-66, in an Indiana Catholic conference game at the Decatur gym. it was a close contest until the closing minutes of the second quarwhen the Commodores JumpedXo an eight-point advantage and held the invaders at bay all through the second half. The Commodores led briefly at 2-0 and 4-2, but Marion took the lead at 6-4 and stayed in front, once by six points, until a pair of free throws by Joe Wilder put Decatur in front at 13-12. Bob Guerrero retaliated with a pair of foul tosses and -Marion was ahead with a minute and a half to go in the first quarter. A pair of last minute fielders by Wilder and Jerry Voglewede gave the Commodores ail 9-16 bulge at the end of the period. The visitors twice pulled into ties at 21-21 and 23-23, but Wilder converted four foul tosses in a row to give the Commodores a lead which they never >< linquished. Fielders by Dave Kahle, Paul Fajirote and another by Kable shot Decatur’s lead to 39-31 at half-time. Six points was as close as Marion came in the third period, but the Commodores quickly squelched the threat and had built up a substantial 62-43 cushion as the teams entered the final eight minutes of play, with Marion never posing a serious threat. 4 "Four boys did the bulk of Decatur's scoring. FauroTe led with 22 points on 11 field goals, Wilder had 16 and Ron Meyer and Voglewede li each. Bob Raih topped Mgrion with 26 points, 12 of them on free throws. The Commodores will entertain the Jefferson Warriors at the Decatur gym next Tuesday night for their last game of 1955. Commodore* IXr FT ,TP R. Meyer 5 4 14 Reed -1 4 6 J. YELLOW JACKETS The sky-scraping Elwood Panthers were run Tagged for two and a half quarters by the Decatur YelI low Jackets, but the smooth southern team came through with 45 points in the last fourteen minutes of the game to whip the Jackets on the Elwood floor, 70-42. The Jackets made up for lack of height with a lot of drive and hustle in the early part of the game, but ■ after leading in the third quarter ' by two points, tired out as the tall Panther* turned on the steam. Two forwards 6-4 and a 6-6 center made the Elwood team an unbeatable i tip-in-trio. The Panthers grabbed an early 6-0 lead, but Murphy with four point* and Baxter’s field goal brought the Jdckets back into the game, where they stayed for the ’ first half. Baxter hit his second of eight fielders as Elwood led at ’ the end of the quarter, 12-8. The Elwood team continued to attempt working the ball in through the second quarter, and ’ an' air-tight Jacket zone defense broke up ona play after another, i Stan Kirkpatrick, who had done some fine rebounding in the first stanza, had a recurrence of knee ’ trouble and was not able th play after the initial period. Sophomores Bob Banks and Larry Moses , played most of the second quarter and kept the Jackets in the game , with their fine defensive work. ’ Gene Baxter hit three more from the field, and Decatur was behind ’ by three. 25-22, at the half. Baxter opened the third period with a fielder. Murphy added a free , throw and Tony Kelly hit on a , jump shot to boost Decatur into a ’ 27-25 lead in the first two minutes ' of the quarter. Then the roof fell in. Elwood scored 16 points while , holding the Jackets scoreless and ’ zoomed to a 47-33 lead at the three- , quarters mark. In the last half, the ( Panthers abandoned any attempts , to work the ball in. They would take one outside shot, and then ' the three big boys would play yol-ley-ball until someone tipped it in. 1 ft was only a matter of time in the final period, as the Jackets were ' too tired to do much rebounding against the ta)l trio. The Jackets record is bow two . W-in* aud tuur losses. The Elwood team has a 6-1 record, losing only to Sheridan.
