Decatur Freshmen Beat Convoy-Union The Decatur freshmen defeated Convoy-Union, 69-46, at the Decatur gym Monday evening. Decatur led at all periods, 23-4. 39-13 and 61-37. Bischoff paced Decatur with 17 points and Holtsberry tallied 14. Rhoades counted 16 for Convoy. Gallardo's handlers refused to let him come out for the seventh round after he took a bad beating in the sixth. The fight was therefore scored as a TKO in the sixth.

Bob Friend Os Pirates Tops Loop Hurlers NEW YORK (INS) —Bob Friend went intb the agate type of the National League record book today as the first man in major league history to win the earned run title while pitching for a last-place club. The Pittsburgh hurler won the pitching championship with a low era mark of 2.84. according to official statistics released today by the senior league. He was only the third righthander in the last ten years, to win the crown. Appearing in 44 games and posting a 14-9' won-lost mark, the 25-year-old six-footer from West Lafayette, Ind., allowed only 63 earned runs in 209 innings, Another righthander, Brooklyn’s Don Newcombe, was runtjerup with a 3.19 mark. But he logged a 20-5 record for an .800 won-lost percentage. tops in the league. Newcombe also had the longest winning streak, ten straight victories from April 14 to June 8,. inclusive. Both Friend and Newk pitched one-hitters during the 1955 campaign, Friend’s coming Sept- 7 against Chicago and Newcombe's on May 10 against the same team. Philadelphia’s strong right arm, Robin Roberts, headed most of the other divisions-most games won (33-14), most starts (38), most batsmen faced (1256), most hits allowed (292), most earned runs allowed (111) and 41 homeruns yielded, a major league record.
