Wednesday was the fourteenth anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a date that will probably never be forgotten. It was a terrible shock to this nation and most of our navy was destroyed. It did bring our people closer together and made possible all the energy needed to win a great war. 0 0 The Chicago Cubs have traded Randy Jackson to the Brooklyn Dodgers and the popular third baseman says he will do a big job for them. He is highly rated as a fielder and batter but says it’s been hard to fight for the Cubs at the end ot the season as they are usually so far down that their players have no “pep” left 0 0 It's a hundred to one shot that the bandit who held up the bank president, Weber Smith and then hurried the eight employes into a record vault escaping with about $75,000 and left notes kidding the employes and the police at Lake Geneva, Wis., will get fooled one of these days. He boasted he had keys to eleven other banks. 0 0 Common stock in the Superior Oil company of California which sold in 1940 for $21.00 a share wak sold yesterday on the New York Stock exchange for $1,020 a share. The stock was the highest prices on the market, higher than Coca Cola, which advanced to $1,015 per share. They are getting into real money now and “pikers" find it a little tough to operate. - ' ' Representative Adams Powell, Jr., of New York, speaking at the meeting on the Men's Civic Association in Purdue Center at Fort Wayne, Wednesday evening says he will ask President Eisenhower to "remove” Secretary of State John Foster Dulles from his job for having lost India and

most of Asia and North Africa for the good will program of the United States. Mr. Dulles may not agree and the congressman may have some difficulty con- z vincing the President althoughPowell does know more about conditions in those countries than the average American. , The present City Council has one more regular session and probably a lame-duck meeting to complete the year’s business and then it will be dissolved. Only one Councilman, Ed Bauer, will be a member of the new Council when Mayor-elect Robert Cole strikes the gavel January 2 to organize for the year. A councilmanic job is a thankless, but most important part of the operation of a municipal government. It is our belief that ~jhe incoming Council will be one of the strongest and most progressive in the history of Decatur. Every member has pledged himself to work for progress and economy in government. —o Dr. James Burk, native of Decatur and a Decatur high school graduate is the new school board member. The well-known Decatur physician has been named by the Council to succeed Harry Irwin, who resigned recently because the Irwin family plans to move out of the corporation limIts ot Decatur. Dt. “Burk always has taken an active interest in the Decatur public school system and he was instrumental In planning the present school improvement program as a committee member as- the Lincoln parentteachers association which worked with school authorities prior to the survey. Dr. Burk should add experience and stature to the board and we congratulate him on his willingness to serve in a capacity so important to the progress of Decatur. We are sure hfc will make an outstanding official.
