Baker Wins In Listless Bout Against Valdes CLEVELAND (INS) — Bob Baker of Pittsburgh lost a chance at a title shot with heavyweight king Rocky Marciano by winning an unimpressive but unanimous 10round decision over Cuba’s Nino Valdes in Cleveland Wednesday night. Officials of the International Boxing Club had announced that the winner, if impressive, would meet Marciano next year. Baker, who now has won 14 in a row, pounded out his second victory over the Cuban heavy, who Is ranked third. The Pittsburgh slugger appeared dull and listless as he entered the ring at a flabby 213% pounds. A crowd or 8,380 booed and sang while the two heavies met in the featured nationally televised bout on the 30th annual Cleveland News Toyshop boxing show. Orlando Zulueta. the fourthranking lightweight, pounded out a unanimous decision over Walter Brown of Baltimore in a fast-mov-ing eight-round battle. Zulueta proved too strong, fast and cute for Brown who was making his first start in some time after managerial trouble. In another supporting match with an international flavor, Argentina’s Eduardo Lausse won his 31st straight by stopping England’s John L Sullivan in the fifth round on a TKO. The Lausse and Sullivan middleweight scrap was a scheduled 10rounder.

Also on the agenda of the annual winter Western Conference meetings is a confab of athletic directors. They are expected to discuss three recommendations proposed Wednesday by Big Ten football coaches; one on rules, another on the schedule, and a third in the marking of the field. The coaches proposed that the collegiate rules be amended to allow the defense to advance the ball on a fumble. They also want the schedule to be expanded to 10 games and would like all conference fields to be marked at one-yard Intervals along the Sidelines al well as along a path 15 yards in bounds. The better marking system, they argue, will enable officials to spot the ball better. Discussion of television is expected to call for clarification of such incidents as telivislng sellout games and the problems of lowa. lowa is in the NCAA's district 5 while all the other Big Ten schools are in district 4. This has caused dissatisfaction with regional telecasts because lowa is in the Big Seven area. The Big Ten Rose Bowl’s pact with the Pacific Coast Conference which runs through Jan. 1, 1957, also is up for discussion. Reports Russ Meyer Will Go To Cubs , NEW YORK (INS) —Brokolyn righthander Russ Meyer reportedly will go to the Chicago Cubs as a wrapup to the deal by which the Dodgers acquired third-baseman Ransom Jackson.
