Evidence Piles Up On Fly Resistance Hessian Flies Are Building Resistance WASHINGTON (INS) — Evidence 1b piling up that Hessian flies can overcome resistance built into varieties of wheat over a number of years. It was learned in Kansas some years back that flies from one area of the state could infest a wheat variety that was resistant to flies from another area. Moreover, it has been found that wheat resistant to California Hessian flies was an easy mark for Indiana flies. At Purdue university, entomologist R. L. Galiun is now looking further into this phenpmenon. From tlie local Hessian fly population he has been able to develop three races, each capable of infesting wheats containing different resistance factors. One race, inbred for 14 generations. readily infested three susceptible wheat varieties but was turned back by two resistant varieties used in the experiment. The second race of flies success-

fully attacked not only the susceptible varieties but one of the resistant varieties as well, and the third race, inbred for six generations, infested all five varieties — susceptible and resistant alike. Galiun is trying to find opt whether, since Gies with specialized reactions to resistant wheats can be bred in the laboratory, the . same thing might not occur through natural selection in the field. Os course farmers still have the ace in the hole provided by late fall planting in keeping the Hes- > sian fly under control. Present damage to small grains, mostly winter wheat, by this insect is estimated to average about 16 million dollars a year. Once, in 1915, before the late planting practice edme into common use Hessian Gies took a bite of more than 100 million dollars out of the small grains harvest. The agricultural research service, commenting on Galiun s work, says hopefully that it's doubtful that the Gy will ever be able to overcome the handicap of late planting inasmuch as this control method interferes with the insect life cycle. ARS predicts that as long as growers observe late planting dates the fly w-ill be no major problem. I
It adds, however, that a single early seeding or a volunteer small early seeding or a volunteer small" grain crop in a community can breed enough flies for a serious outbreak the following spring. This is the reason that so-called “safe planting dates” have - been established each year for every grain-producing area. Farmers'who plant according to these dates aren't likely to get into serious trouble because ofr the Gy. Amateurs Make Uranium Strikes OMAHA (INS) — More than half the uranium strikes in the United States have been made by amateurs, according to University of Omaha physics instructor J. G. McMillan. He adds that “you don’t have to be an expert to find it.” However, Professor McMillan cautions, relatively few amateur prospectors make a paying strike and the search should be conducted as a hobby or avocation. In addition to rewards offered for discoveries -of the nuclear weapon material. Uranium-235 is worth about $9,000 a pound. Pitcairn island has an area of about 1.200 acres.

Says Farmers Need Prosperity Share Congresswoman In Views On Problems GREENHILL, Ind. (INS) — Farmers must obtain ti larger share of the national prosperity, according to Republican congresswoman Cecil M. Harden, who addressed an Indiana Farm Bureau meeting at Greenhill Monday night. The speech again drew attention to the political danger faced by the GOP next year because of slipping agriculture prices. Mrs. Harden maintained that an effective farm program must meet three conditions, which she listed as follows: 1. Provide a means for orderly reduction of present surpluses which depress the market. >2. Decrease farm production without imposing hardship on individual farmers. 3. Increase consumption "of farm products, both at home and through export abroad. Mrs. Harden said she is very much interested in the soil-bank ■ plan involving federal payments
to farmers for taking land out of production. She also voiced concern over reclamation projects in the west, adding that she does not intend to vote “to spend millions of tax dollars to bring new farm land into production so long as we are faced with surpluses from the land we now have." Motorist Catches Gasoline Thief FREEPORT, 111. (INS) — Here’s a man who knows how’ to catch a thief—and blow his own horn at the same time. One of the neatest bits of homemade sleuthing was reported by a frustrated motorist. Plagued for months by mysterious disappearing gas’ tank balances in the family auto, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Describing his plan in an entry in an idea contest the motorist told how he had caught the thief wet-mouthed. He wired the gas tank flap to the horn so that in closed position the flap depressed a small switch holding the circuit open. Lifting the flap, closed the circuit, sounding the horn. For legitimate purposes, the switch can be disconnected via a dashboard switch.

Okinawa Important Bastion In Pacific Island's Position Brings Importance NAHA. Okinawa. (INS) — Okinawa stands today like a giant American fist ready to deal deadly retribution if the communists resort to aggression again in Asia. The geographical location of the American island bastion and its relative permanence are its two most valuable assets. Medium bombers front Okinawa’s concrete runways can sweep Asia from deep in the south to Siberia, blanketing with a potential nuclear weapon counter-punch some 27 percent of the total population of the world. Long range inter-continental bombers? using the same springboard runways, can reach anything"between the Pacific and the Atlantic.. 1 Okinawa, unlike other powerful American - manned bases in the Far East, is under American jurisdiction. This fact makes military leaders place more and more reliance in long term thinking on the island’s military capability. American forces have been passing out of Korea and Japan, and are likely to continue to do so in the future. Bases available on Formosa and the Philippines are too far south for the same effective protection from aggression from the north: Okinawa also offers a shortrange punch in the form of atom-bomb-carrying Sabrejet fighterbombers which can hit the Chlnesa I mainlands with ease. Most important they can hit the complex of airfields around Shanghai some 465 miles away and make it back to Okinawa, Okinawa’s military value lies mainly in its “staging” capability. From this springboard the big planes can launch .on deadly errands. smaller plans ' can island hop. such- as they did to Formosa when the Tachen Islands were threatened, and troops can use the island for the same purpose. Atomic artillery, which now defends the beaches on Okinawa in event of an enemy lafiding, can be shipped hurriedly from the island to a forward area north or south with equal ease. America’s permanence in’the island fs- 'reflected in the furious construction program which has already used some S7OO million of a one billion dollar master plan. Permanent typhoon-proof concrete buildings are mushrooming, at a furious pace. The term "concrete island” is heard frequently from residents as well as amazed visitors. The heavy building program provides a permanent living status to the defenders of the island. There should Im no doubt that America intends to remain on Okinawa for many, many years to come.
