Ex-Garbo Property May Be Oil Site I May See New Oil Boom in Michigan ALLEGAN, Mich. (INS) —Some property that once belonged to Greta Garbo has turned into a rich oil strike for an Allegan,

Mich., man, and experts predict I that the discovery may touch off a new oil boom in southwestern Michigan. Oilman Louis Zellman said that a test well brought in on the land produced approximately 25 barrels of oil an hour, following a 2,000 gallon acid treatment. The property once belonged to a 70-year-old British-born recluse, Edgar Donne, who willed his entire estate to actress Greta Garbo. The will —probated Feb. 18, 1947

—named Miss Garbo as the sole heir of Donne, who had died the previous fall in a tiny, one-room cabin located in the center of his 190-acre farm. Townspeople in Salehi township knew very little about the old recluse. Some of his neighbors who knew him for 25 years were surprised to learn that he came from a wealth)- British family and was a descendant of the famed English poet, John Donne. A story circulated at the time was that Donne had been banished from England by his family following an unfortunate love affair. Donne worked as a waiter in several large cities before coming to Salem township in 1922, where he lived as a recluse on the bank money orders that arrived each month from England. During the height of the Salem township oil boom from 1935 to 1940. Donne was offered as high as 150.000 for his 190 acres, but he had always refused to sell. Instead, he chose to remain on the land and leave his estate intact for the women he loved but f

; never met. Miss Garbo reportedly turned over the proceeds of the estate to the Sister Kenny Foundation. When the estate was closed in , 1948, the cash residue totaled only |1,200, far less than the 120,000 , estimated when the contents of the will were revealed publicly. Zellman bought the farm for his wife in 1948 from Greta Garbo. The cabin Edgar Donne lived in has since been destroyed by fire, but Zellman said he planned to rebuild it for use as a hunting lodge. The discovery well was brought in at a depth 6f 2,107 feet, considerably deeper than the average southwestern Michigan well. The formation producing oil in this well is known as the lower “Detroit River.” The Salem area has been known for more than 20 years as an oilproducing territory. Several other deeper test wells drilled five or more years ago were unsuccessful and Zellman, himself, had drilled three dry holes on the “Garbo Earm” before hitting paydirt.
