Decatur Commodores Hand Hoagland Initial Loss Os Season, 69-53
The Decatar Commodores handed the Hoagland Wildcats their first loss of the season Tuesday night, pulling away in the final period for a 6053 victory after a close battle througih the first three quarters at the Decatur gym. It was the Commodores’ fourth win of the season as compared to a single setback, while Hoagland had won Its first three starts. The opening period was a close affair all the way, with Dave Terveer’s boys on top by two points, 17-16, as the quarter ended. The Commodores built their lead to >2348 in the first two minutes of the second period, but the Wildcats came back to lead at 20-26, but a pair of free throws by Ron Meyer and Dave Kable's fielder gave Decatur a 30-29 advantage at the half. The field goal and a pair of foul tosses by Tom Schlemmer, plus a charity shots*by Ron Hoile shot {ioagland into a 36-20 lead in the first minute of the third quarter. The Commodores slowly whittled away at their deficit and finally caught the visitors at 40-40 with slightly more than two minutes to play The locals then counted eight points in a row but the Allen county quintet bounced back with five of their own and it was 48-4-5. Decatur, as the final period got underway. The Commodores had boosted this margin to 54-48 midway through the final quarter, and then pulled away in the closing minutes. *' _ Joe W’ilder topped the scoring with 19 points, nine on free throws. Ron Meyer and Jerry Voglewede each scored 14 points and Paul Faurote 13. Hoile was tops fori Hoagland with 19. The Commodores 3 accumulated most of the margin at the foul line, converting 25 of; 43 chances, while Hoagland made 15 of 30. Spartans Down Adams Central Tuesday Night A fourth-quarter rally carried the Pleasant Mills Spartans to a 66-62 triumph over the Adams Central Greyhounds at the Pleasant Mills gym Tuesday nightThe Greyhounds led at the first quarter, 14-11, at the half, 32-23, and at the third period, 48-45, but could not halt the Spartans bid for victory. Gorillas Score i First Win Os Year Tuesday The Hartford Gorillas registered their first victory of the season Tuesday night after dropping their first four, defeating the Bryant Owls, 63-52, on the Hartford court. The Gorillas jumped Into a sizeable lead of 20-7 at the first quarter and were in front at the half, 47-26, and at the third period, 57-37. Dean Stahly led Hartford with 20 points, closely trailed by Roger Moser with 19. Walter paced Bryant with 18 markers.
