q| | o« Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson. Evidence of Jesus’ Power. Luke 7:11-23. for Sunday. November 20. The fact that God was in Christ needed to be proved, in order that ho might command the attention of all men. and that he might do the work for which he was sent, "therefore, he did what no other man did. The raising of the dead to life as illustrated in this lesson was reassuring of Jesus' deity and power. Then his power was demonstrated in his whole program which was revealed to the disciples of John The Baptist. V.ll. "And it came to pass the day after that he went into a city called Nain. and many of his disciples went with him and much people. This evept followed the healing of the centurion's servant. It is a good guess that Jesus knew what was happening at Nain and would seize the occasion to teach the fact of his deity, a truth so essential in his ministry. V. 12. “Now when he bame nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother. and she was a widow; and . much people of the city was with her.” This is obe of three events where Jesus met death and brought back life. There is a general fear of death, the common enemy of our physical life. Death breaks hearts and homes and leaves sorrow and frustration. The woman knew sorrow, for she was a widow. Jesus' power is to b« demonstrated in .acts of healing and in lus ability to make possible the resurrection of the dead. V.L3. “And when the Lord saw her. he had coiupassiou on her and said. Weep not," Jesus is a sympathizing friend; if th|is woman could believe in the resurrection she would not need to weep. Y-TT. ’’And he came and touched the bier; and they that bare him stood stHt. And he said, Young mam J t.ljje. Arise." Jesus spake as no other man ever spoke; He had the authority, to do so. -V.15. ‘‘And he that was dead sat up and began tospeak. And, he delivered him to his mother." In a deeper sense, Jesus has power to bring forth one dead in sins and trespasses; and restore a lost < hild to his mother. V. 16. "And there came a fear on all; and they glorified (Ibd. saying. That a great prophet is risen up among us and that God has visited his people." • V. 17. ‘‘And this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judea and throughout all the region about."'Here was the good news pf the gospel and it could not lie suppressed. The large number of witnesses to the power of Jesus was a help in his ministry. Jesus asked that all who follow him be his witnesses. Not to witness to the saving power of Jesus is to fail God V.lB. "And the disciples of John showed him all these things." John had been in prison a year; he was .eager to know more about Jesus; he was hi need of comfort; though in prison, his disciples were faithful, and in this there was comfort. but it takes Jesus to ■bring the needed comfort. V. 19. “And John calling to him two of his > disciples, sent them to lesus saying. Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?” John had a prison mind. Prison camps are hard to take: adee p desire for assurance that God

i cares. V. 20. "When the men were come unto him they said. John the Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying. Art thou he who should come? or look we for anoter?" These disciples were true and faithful, repeating exactly John's message, as given them. True disciples -will always be loyal to the truth. V. 21. "And in the same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; j and to many that were blind he gave sight.” Truth demonstrated is concrete and more believable to doubting disciples. It requires unwavering faith to know the Lord. V s 9. “Then "Jesus answering. , said unto them, Go your way and tell John what things ye have seen, and heard; how the blind see. the lame walk. the lepers are cleansed, the deaf Gear. the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached." Here is fulfilled the text Jesus used at Nazareth. V. 23. “And blessed is he. whosoever shall not be offended in me." lx is by doubting that Jemts is offended. There are two classes, offenders and defenders: each one must make a choice. —The Rev. D. Carl Yoder. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the division of Christian Education.
