Commodores Register 71-51 Victory Over Hartford Last Night
Running up a big early lead, the Decatur Commodores carried on to a 71-51 triumph over the Hartford Gorillas Tuesday night at the Decatur gym. It was the Commodores' second win in as many starts and Hartford's second loss in two attempts. Sparked by the hot shooting of Paul Paurote, the Oommodores pulled away in a big hurry. Bob Biberstein hit front the field for the first points of the game, but the Commodores then scored 16 points in a row before Dean Stahly converted a pair of free throws after six minutes had elapsed. ; The Decatur lads built up a 32-5 margin at the first quarter, as Hartford had miserable shooting luck, netting only Biberstein’s fielder in thp fiast eight minutes. The Commodores kept goipg in the second period, and had increased their margin *to 27 points at MHI after five minutes of play. The Gorillas, led .by scoring burst by Joyce Zuercher, cut the halftime score to 40-20. Hartford threw a real scare into the Commodore partisans in the third quarter, narrowing Decatur's lead to only eight points at 47-39, but Decatur had a 10-point bulge, 50-40, at the third period, and doubled this lead in the final eight minutes of play. Four of Decatur’s starters finished in double figures. Faurote was tops with 21 points, followed by Joe Wilder with 15 points and Ron Meyer and Jetty Voglewede with 14 each. Dave Kabie, Commodore regular, was unable ttf-play because of illness. Ztiereher was the only Gorilla able to hit consistently, winding up with 23 points to top both quintets. The Gorillas will host the Pleasant Mills Spartans at Hartford Friday, while the Commodores are idle the rest of the week. They will play away from home twice next week, meeting Monroeville at Hoagland Nov. 16 and playing at

Pleasant Mills Spartans Score First Victory The Pleasant Mills Spartans broke their early-eeason losing streak Tuesday night, opening their home season with a 68-45 victory over Wren, 0., after dropping their first two contests away from home. The Spartans led at all periods, 14-8. 31-19, ants 56-29, for their onesided triumph. neasant Mills had a well jbalanced attack, John Speakman and Jerry Williamson each scoring 12 points, and Darvin Light 11. Dunkirk Hands Berne 48-42 , Loss Tuesday The Berne Bears were handed their first defeat of the season Tuesday night, dropping a 48-42 decision to the Dunkirk Speedcats at Dunkirk. The Bears had won their season opener last week. The game wage lose all the way, with Dunkirk, however, on top at all periods, 9-7, 23-19 and 31-28. Tom Ehrsam, veteran Berne guard, led all scorers with 17 points, 11 of them on free throws. The Bears connected on only nine field goals during the entire contest. Lafevre topped Dunkirk with 14 points. The Bears will entertain the New Haven Bulldogs at Berne Friday night. Reports Sharp Drop iln Football Deaths LGB ANGELES (INS) —The fatalities commlt;ee of the American football coaches association report* that football deaths have dropped sharply this season. Committee Chairman Floyd R. Eastwood said Tuesday only four deaths resulting directly from football Injuries were reported to him up to Nov. 1. During the same period in 1054 there were 12 deaths. He said head injuries caused all ■ four deaths. Hartford City Woman Is Fatally Injured MUNCIE, Ind. (INS) — Mrs. Rosa D. Thomas, 60, of Hartford City, died today In Ball Memorial Hospital at Muncie of injuries suffered in a car-pedestrian accident Mrs. Thomas suffered what proved to be fatal injuries Monday night when she was struck as she walked along Ind. 3 about 10 miles north of Muncie. The driver, Robert Carteaux, 21, of Fort Wayne, said Mrs. Thomas appeared to walk in front of his car as he drive it over the crest of a hill. Plan Adult Farmers Class This Winter The vocational agricultural advisory council met recently and made plans for the adult farmers class which will be conducted this winter. The first meeting will be held Monday evening January 9, starting at 7:30 o’clock. There will approximately ten meetings in the course. All meetings will be held on Monday and any farmer or business map in this area who would be interested is invited to attend. There will be no charge for the course.
