Woodward Received Mystery Phone Call New Investigation In Shotgun Slaying NEW-YORK (INS) — A mystery phone call received by millionaire sportsman William Woodward Jr. shortly before bl* death today touched off a new investigation in to his shotgun slaying by hi* wife. Ann. The handsome socialite took the call Saturday night at the Locust Valley mansion of Mrs. George F. Baker where he and hi* wife were attending a party for the Duchess of Windsor. , Detectives were attempting relearn whether a woman made the call. They also spught to learn wheth er the Woodwards discussed the subject when they returned'to their Oyster Bay home where Ann shot him to death a tew hour* later, assertedly in mistaken belief he was a prowler. • Through questioning of the 58 sOcfally i»romtnent*gue»t»; author! ties hoprfii to determine whether Mrs. W'codjjmrd asked her husband to take hernorae andruy gfw nw received the call. When the couple left the party well ahead of other guests, Mrs: Woodward reportedly gave as her reason her concern over the return drive in the rain. Nassau county district attorney Frank Oulotta confirmed report* Mrs. Woodward had hired private detectives to shadow her husband, but apparently "found nothing wrong." 1 The prosecutor said: "I wouldn't characterize her a* a jealous woman. Perhaps It would be more In the nature of a pro l found love." In another development, authorities hinted Paul S. Wirths Jr., 22, may possibly hold the key to what actually happened in the 12-room Woodwaru mansion early Sunday. Police said they would requestion the German refugee in an effort to establish whether he was in the house around the time of the shooting and if he overheard any conversations. When he first was arrested by Huntington police. Wirths said he might have been on the estate Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Detectives said they were suspicious of Wirths' HU-.e.i uenial of thiS upon-learning of the slaying and the possibility he might be implicated in some way. Anotjier reason for officials’ mistrust of Wirths' denial was his eagerness to sign confessions to other burglaries and waive examInation without heat'ing lo "get It over with In a hurry." » Hartford —About 80 of Connecticut's high schools have driver . training courses.
