California Farmers Not Seeking Dole Witnesses Assail Flexible Program YOSEMITE, Calif. (INS) —U.S. senators w-ho will write a new farm bill leave California today with the assurance that farmers in this state are not holding out their hands for the dole. ■ This blunt statement was made before the senate agriculture committee late Wednesday in a hearing at Fresno—part of the senators* cross-country fact-finding tour. It came from Mrs. Gene Fisher of Escalon, Calif., who said that she —a woman —was selected to represent her dairying community because the men “couldn’t afford the luxury” of a substitute milker. Mrs. Fisher was one of many witnesses at the Fresno hearing to attack the present flexible price program. She said: “We are just as confused as we can be.” The witness, who said she was speaking for “the little people of California," expressed belief that the solution lies in direct federal production payments to the farmer. But she Aided: “We are not holding out our hands for the dole.” A wool-growing witness also endorsed the incentive payments plan as now embodied in .the national wool act, and declared: "I’d like to say thank God for Benson,” meaning agriculture secretary Benson who has been under fgire frequently during the hearings. Committee chairman Allen J. Ellender (DLa.) replied: “You ought to thank his predecessor because it (The wool act) is the Brannan plan.”
Opposes Beer Sales On College Campus MADISON, Wis. (IN8) —Aiderman Lawrence McCormick presented a plan to ban the sale of beer on the University of Wisconsin campus and said: “I don’t feel that it is the function of a university to condone drinking by teenagers from 18 through 20.” SEEK TO PIN (Continued From Page One) with Yugoslavia’s Marshal Tito in time for the Russian party. , „ • j BLOODY BATTLE t (Continued From Page One) through the zdrie. "* The attackers were said to have returned to their base outside the zone. A spokesman for the UN Truce supervisory organization said UN observers “were prevented by the Israelis from moving freely within the zone." Therefore, he aauou, no reports would be forthcoming from the organization which has struggled •lice 1949 to keep the uneasy ArabIsraeli truce from exploding into renewed full-scale war. The Israeli foreign ministry commented on the truce group’s statement: “If observers were not allowed to move freely during the attack, It was because it would be unsafe for them to do so.” If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad.
