Mother Acquitted Os Murder Charge Order Hearing To Determine Sanity WASHINGTON (INS) — A hearing will be held Monday to determine the present mental state of a young mother acquitted on grounds of insanity for the slaying of her husband’s mistress. Defense counsel made the move to gain freedom for Mrs. Katherine Ann Haynes. Her committal to a mental institution was compulsory with the Jury’s verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. A jury of six men and six women deliberated the fate of the 93-pound brunette for 27 hours under instructions from Federal Judge Matthew F. McGuire to "use your heads and not your hearts.” The 28-year-old' woman, who has four children, killed 19-year-old Nancy Penton with one pistol shot after she had followed her husband to the apartment which he maintained for his teen-aged mistress. Prosecution attorneys pictured Mrs. Haynes as a cold-blooded killer, but defense counsel said she was driven to temporary insanity by her husband’s boasts of his paramour’s “sex ability” and his frequent trysts with her while neglecting support of his family.
