More Westinghouse Plants Are Struck 17,000 UE Workers Strike 14 Plants PITTSBURGH (INS)' — Some 17/00 workers represented by the independent United Electrical Workers Union struck 14 Westinghouse plants at midnight to back up their demands for a pay increase. Like the CIO International Union of Electrical Workers whose 44,000 members walked out of 29 plants last Oct. 17, the UE turned down a company offer of a flve-year contract Both unions bad entered negotiations with the company under terms of a wage reopening clause in fheir two-year contracts. Some 5000 UE members are employed at the Nuttall works in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville section and another 1000 at a porcelain plant tn Westmoreland county at Derry. About 7000 have been on strike at Westinghouse’s south Philadelphia works since last Oct. 14 in a dispute over job reelasaiEcation.
