Smith Retains Title On Win Over Carter CINCINNATI HNS) - Hometown product Wallace (Bud) Smith blessed strong recuperative powers sud a controversial decision today for a 15-round victory over Jimmy Carter that enabled, him to retain the world lightweight championship. Smith weathered a near-knock-cut in the 13th round as he frustrated the in-and-outagain Carter’s bid for a “fourth terin" as 135pound ruler. And Bud had the advantage of a unanimous decision that was booed long and lustily by many in an audience of 6.693 at Cincinnati Gardens. I'nder a scoring system where three Judges awarded ten points to the winner of each round and less to his opponent depending upon the closeness. Smith had favorable tallies of 143-135. 143-139 and 143139 from judges Gene Nitzchke, Willie Purcell and Joe Blink, respectively. Blink's card originally was announced as a 140-140 draw. The INS card scored Carter ini front, 142 to 140, and most newsmfn at ringside also believed Jimmy had won back his lendlease title with a vagorous late rally. Carter s manager, Willie Ketchum. loudly lambasted the “ten must” scoring system and said Jimmy wmuld like a rematch "even here in Smith's hometown.” Bud. observing that Carter seemed “more serious minded" than he did in their first title fight last June 29, indicated a preference for

Cisco Andrade as his next title opponent but offered to give Carter another shot “if he makes the money right.” Smith’s manager. Carmen Graziano, said the champion will not defend again until "well after the first of the year.” He said he would like to arrange over-the-weight bouts with welterweight champion Carmen Basilio or exwelter king Tony De Marco. Both Hua ana carter weighed exactly the 135 limit Wednesday night. Carter was seeking to regain the title tor an unprecedented third time. He has been on*and off the throne since taking the crown from Ike Williams in May, 1951. He subsequently lost it to Lauro Salas and Paddy De Marco, but took it back each time. He was an Mo-5 favorite to di) the same Wednesday night, but his chances actually went glimmering in the first five rounds. Smith, landing often and solidly \vith left bdoks, breezed ahead in the earTy going and opened a cut above Carter’s right eye in the third. Jimmy, his eye rapidly swelling shut, began throwing hard combinations and forcing the fighting in the sixth. He shook Bud with a left and right to the chin in the seventh, was staggered himself w hen he walked into a right in the tenth, had Smith wobbling again in the 11th and almost landed the payoff in the 13th. In that round, two terrific rights to the side of the head sent Smith floundering across the ring headlong into the ropes. He turned, groping blindly, clutched Carter around the middle and hung on. A whistling left to the mouth sat Smith down on the lower strand of the ropes, but he struggled back to his feet as the bell sounded.

St. Joe Is Surprise In Indiana Football EVANSVILLE, Ind. (INS)— Be fore the current, Indiana Collegiate Conference football season kicked off, the Pumas of St. Joseph's posed only one question—would there be enough players to field a team in 11-man Competition. Today the only question appears to be how soon will the Pumas take their first loop championship. And if these formerly meek members sudden power is surprising how about the dentured grin spread across the face of DePau w's previously toothless Tigers who may lake second place in the ICC. St. Joe goes to Evansville Saturday for the key clash of the week in the conference. A victory would give St Joe the title. An Evansville victory would force St. Joe to win against Ball State the following Saturday to tie Evansville or win the title in two remaining loop games. The Pumas dropped their opening contest to Central State and since then have played exclusively in the ICC and have wan-four-straight averaging 27 points a game while holding opponents to 6. DePauw has four backs averaging more than five yards a carry and hope this will be enough to take the Tigers to their first victory over Butler since 1926. Former all state halfback Tom Campbell, a 9.5-yard per try rusher fronr Sullivan is expected to | carry the brunt of the attack from the left halfback slot as DePauw hopes to take a more firm hold on third or second place. Both teams have 2-2 league records. Valparaiso also has a 2-2 mark which it hopes to improve against Ball State's sofar disappointing Cardinals, 1-2 in the league. Indiana State visits Eastern Illinois in a non-conference game. Trade in a Good Totvn — Decatur
