Temptation t* th* point ta this lesson whdh applies to th* drtaking of intoxicant*. The habit of drinking is acquired. Water is the natural drink for man. Children do not ask for alcohol, they want water. Drinking Begin* by means of temptation: with tim*, the temptation grows stronger and biMs its victim as a slave. Temptation call* for a struggle, and. in struggling, strength of character is produced, if temptation is resisted. As there wws a human side to Christ, he was subject to the most appealing testa, in which he would not yield, and won as conqueror. V.l. The Holy Spirit powerfully impressed Jesus to draw apart in the wilderness to be tested and prove God** power in him to overcome every temptation that might befall man.” When Christ dwells within, one can any. ”1 can do all thing* through Christ w£ich strengtheneth me.” V. 2. “Being forty days tempted of the deviL And in those days he did eat nothing. And when they had ended he afterwards hungered." Likely Jesus underwent a siege of all kinds of temptations, the last one* being the climax. No one is free from temptations. There is n* sin in temptation* — the sin come* in the yielding. V. 3. “And the devil said unto him. If thou be the Ron of God, command this stone that it be made bread.” Fasting forty days, Jesus must have been very hungry and bread furnished a strong temptation. Jesus suffered hunger. But nothing material can satisfy the soul. V.l. "And Jesus answered him. saying. It Is written. Thou shalt not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” Je*u* resorted to the then known Bible. What God’s word does teach is fundai mental when tempted. ... V 5.5,8. "And the devil taking him up into a high mountain, showed unto htok-all the kingdoms of the world in -a -moment of time. Short cuts, following the lines of least resistance, ar* alluring; they are the roads to failur*. V«. 7,8. “If thou therefore will worship me, all shall be thine. Jesus answered and said, Get thee behind me Satan; for it is written Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou aerv*." Again Jesus resort* to th* word of God. Wrong habits and wrong relations to God will lead to the worshiping of some object other than God. What and whom you worship determine the kind of man you are. V 5.9,10,11. “And he brought him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said unto him. It thou be the Son of God, cast thou thyself down from thence: For it is written. He shall give his angels charge over thee, to weep thee: And in their hand*, they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a Stone.” The devil now quotes Scripture; the devil would himself behind Scripture. One may prove wrong by appearing to use Scripture. Alcohol quotes this verse. “Take a little wine for your stomach’s sak*” Psalms 91:11 teaches God’a providence to those who abide in him. The devil quoted texts out of their content. Here was the temptation of presumption and holding God responsible for consequences. V. 12. "And Jesus answering said unto him, It 1* said. Thou shalt not tempt the Lord- thy God.” We can not expect God to take care of us when we do some rash thing. V. 13. "And when the devil had ended all the temptations, he departed from him tor a season.’’ As long as we live we may expect to meet temptation. After Jesus’ victory. he proceeded to do his work.
