Homemaking Tips By Miss Bertha Landis Homa Demonstration Agent *■ V ■ Many of the family's recreational activities will be moving indoors within a few months. So now's the time to begin planning a room for them. Space for indobr recreation involves careful planning. The plan should taka into consideration the preferences, skills, and talents of each family member, and yet be flexible enough to allow for adjustments as family members change or grow up. The beat location for each activity, and how space can best be organised must be ascertained. Multiple use of space, adequate storage facilities, convenient traffic lanes, and the choice of design and materials that provide torease of care and upkeep make a good plan even better. Helpful ideaso can be obtained ■ J from the new Purdue University extension publication “Plan recreation space for your home.” Prepared by Ruth Hutcheson, home management specialist, the mimeo contains things to keep in mind when developing the plan, floor plans, and drawings of recreation units and different types of storage facilities. Bulk Tanks Replace Milk Cans On Farms Eases Work, Brings On Premium Prices WASHINGTON (INS) — The agriculture department suggests that dairymen can make their chores easier and perhaps get a premium price at the same time by switching from milk cans to bulk tanks. A report In the current "Agricultural Situation" says that tanks have replaced the old-fashioned can on at least 15,006 U. S. dairy farms with most of the changeover taking place since 1951In the refrigerated tank, the milk is cooled rapidly and kept cool until the hauler picked it up. The department publication points out that this type of handling eliminates the work of lifting heavy cans and may also mean actual savings in time. For one thing, it eliminates the job of washing cans at the farm as some milkshehds require. Cleaning a bulk tank is said to take much less time. Says the report: “The important point here appears to be that although ..the saving of time may be significant on many farms, it is not likely to be large enough to permit much if any reduction in the labor force. “The result is more likely to be a shorter working day or an increase in volume of business within the same length of day.

“In any case, the possibilities—combined t'ne reduction In heavy lifting — should mean happier workers, and should make it easier to attract and hold the skilled workers needed on dairy farms.’’ As for the money angle, the article says that many dairymen who have gone in for bulk handling have received either a price premium or a reduced hauling charge, or both.
