Fear Knowland's Chances Suffering Fear Presidential Chances Suffering WASHINGTON (INS) — Friends of Senate GOP leader William F. Knowltnd fear his presidential chances may suffer from political silence while Vice President Richard Nixon's 1956 build-up picks up momentum. Nixon’s public activity during President Eisenhower’s recuperation from a heart attack waa broadened by his resumption of a limited speaking schedule, starting next week In New York. Pending Mr. Eisenhower's recovery and declaration of his own intentions, both Californians have made it plain they will not speculate on the Republican presidential nomination next year. The GOP floor leader’s intimates recognize that this hurts Knowland and helps Nixon. The vice president, by reason of his proximity to the presidency and his direct substitution for Mr. Eisenhower on public platforms, is bound to gain more national attention. One Republican source said Gov. Goodwin Knight served his notice last week that he would head California’s convention delegation, regardless of Nixon, only to offset the build-up. Announcement of Nixon's enlarged speaking activity followed news from the Denver White House that the vice president's planned “good will"* trip to the Middle East, had been postponed indefinitely. Nixon’s aides said he will accept speaking engagements if he can leave Washington in the late afternoon and return as soon as the speech is completed. On this basis, he accepted an invitation to represent the President in an address before the international air transport association banquet in New York Oct. 17. The same evening he also will address the New York Herald Tribune for-

Thousands Os East Germans Flee To West Fear, Want, Drive More Thousands To Flee East Germany WASHINGTON (INS) — Fear and want are driving increasing thousands of East Germans into flight from the Communists to freedom in the west. Since February the number of Germans fleeing to the west from Soviet rule has increased steadily. Two weeks ago it reached a twoyear high of 4.700 refugees moving into the western sone in seven days. Last week this figure was bettered in six days when 4.913 crossed to freedom in Friday night. The panic button has not sounded as loud as it did just before ths anti-Communist riots of June 17, 1953 when Germans threw stones at Russian tanks. In May and the first half of June of that year, there was one week when 15.50 V East Germans fled into West Berlin and another when 12,850 broke across the barrier. In 1953, however, almost all refugees passed through West Berlin while today almost half of the Germans fleeing Communism cross into other parts of West Germany. The increased movement since February this year reflects a number of factors. There is fear of conscription into the new Red army since East German Communist party boss Walter Ulbricht said gn Sept. J 26 that a new constitutional amendment gives his regime the power to draft men for military service. Ulbricht insisted the government had no intention of ordering a draft immediately but the threat remains. Russian statements that the world must recognize two Germanys as a fact are another factor. The refugees say they have lost hope of freedom through the unification of Germany and decided to take things into their own hands. Another strong factor is the difference in the life of a working man in free Germany and the communist part of the nation. Rebekah Assembly Closes Convention INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — The Indiana Rebekah assembly closed Tts 71 st ahiiuaT ‘convention Th" the Odd Fellows auditorium at Indianapolis today. Rare Document LOS ANGELES (INS) — The University of California has obtained one of the six known copies .of the Constitution for the onceproposed State of West Texas. Historians say the never-enacted Constitution was probably drawn up in the late 1860's by West Texans who wanted to, secede from the rest of the Lone Star State.

County Agent's Column o —- —• Order Trees Now Hoosier farmers interested in securing trees for planting next spring can now place their orders with state nurseries. E. J. Lott, Purdue University extension forester, reports that about eight million trees are being made available to Hoosier farmers at the cost of production. Each year these trees are sold for general reforestation, windbreaks, Christmas trees and erosion control purposes. Interested farmers can obtain application forms from the county agent, any state forester, the forestry extension office at Purdue, or the division of forestry, 311 West Washington St.. Indianapolis. Lott urges farmers to order early in order to get the species desired. Trees secured from the state nurseries must be planted in rural areas outside of city or town limits. All purchases must be in quantities of 50 or more of any species and the buyer must pay transportation costs. Varieties of trees available for planting next spring include tulip poplar, black locust, and shortleaf, Virginia, scotch, jack, red, and white piAe. If help is needed to determine what, where, and how to plant trees, farmers should contact their county agent or nearest extension forester. AdjustCornpicker How much of your corn crop will you leave in the field this fall? If your cornpicker is not properly adjusted, you may be leaving more than you think. . Les Hill, agricultural engineer at Purdue University, says to measure off a square 40 inches on each side, centered on a picked row. Each 20 kernels found within this square indicates a one-bushel loss per acre due to shelling. To estimate ear losses measure off 40 hills. 133 feet, or 43 steps along a row. Each good-sized ear found in this distance indicates a onebushel loss per acre of ear corn. Hill says that proper picker adjustment and early harvesting will reduce the loss of corn regardless of what other conditions affect the crop. More-over adequate "wrench work.” prompt replacement of worn parts, and frequent lubrications will reduce the chances of accidents. The machine will
be able to handle the corn more effectively and the corn will be in a better harvest condition. Now’s the time to get out the manufacturer's instruction book and look it over again. In it you'll find a complete listing of the machine’s adjustments, maintenance requirements, and safe operating procedures. Additional suggestions Gjn be found in the Purdue University mimeo titled "Corn Harvest Hints,’* available at the county agent's office.
