Series Shows Dodgers. Yanks Well Matched | NEW YORK (INS) — Even in j defeat, the New York Yankees ac-I complished one thing. National Leaguers are not going to go around all this winter, as . they did after the New York Giants' straight-game humiliation of Cleveland, bragging that their lea- j gue Is vastly - superior to the 1 Angeric.an. A seven-game World Series, fi-1 natty decided by a 2-to-9 finale. • does not argue any tremendous authority to the winner. Leaving out the injury factor, which certainly worked to the disadvantage of the Yankees, these were two teams about as evenly matched as it is possible on conceive over j -a seven-day period. How they would compare over i 1 an entire season is something else | again. The Yankees demonstrated that their's is a better bench. The Dodgers showed superior over-all pitching, particularly in the bullpen. Unlike the Giants, who elected after their 1954 success to play a pat hand and discovered it can’t be done in baseball, both the Dodgers and Yankees may be expected to make, or try to make, some changes during the off-season. The Brooks do not know whether Jackie Robinson will be back. Neither does Jackie at the moment. As he explains it, he’d like to continue at least one more season.. But not if the Dodgers ask their fading star to take a pay cut. Manager Smokey Alston, a* Don Hoag fan from their mutual days at Montreal, can replace Robby with Hoak and have a man who will field better at third base than Jackie and probably hit for as high an average as Robinson did in 1955. He'll not replace so easily Jackie's combative spirit nor his base running daring nor his ability to rise to an occasion in the clutch. Despite Sandy Amoros'- key sev-enth-game catch and throw, the stubby Cuban leaves much to be desired in left field. Sandy is only 23, has great natural ability, and his effectiveness might be greatly improved it the kid could be Induced to take some (English lessons. Alston is not satisfied with Jim Gilliam at second base. Part of the time, Don Zimmer looks like the man to step, in and become boss, but so far the youngster has been too inconsistent to be a sure bet for regular duty. On the Yankee side, the immediately pressing problem is shortstop. Although Phil Rizzuto, a real little pro. came through with a heart-warming "money” perform-* ance in the series, he’s 37 and can’t play that way through an entire season. A rookie named Jerry Lumpe was* impressive at Birmingham and may be the man the Yanks are searching for. The Bombers are accustomed to great shortstopping, have had nothing else but .in „ EEH3I — TODAY — Continuous from 1:30 “HOW TO BE VERY, VERY POPULAR” Betty Grable, Bob Cummings ALSO — Shorts 15c • 50c BE SURE TO ATTEND! —■O—O—FRI. & SAT.
