Sizzling Debate On Farm Price Costs Varying Views By Political Leaders WASHINGTON (INS) — How does one reconcile such different points of view as the following: Republican — A recent public opinion sample “indicates that most farmers feel that their income this year will be as good if not a little better than last year.” Democratic —Farmers are out of patience with the “pious platitudes and sugar coated pills” they have been getting from agriculture secretary Ezra Taft Benson. These are excerpts from the latest exchanges in the sizzling debate over the farm cost price squeeze and how to cure it. The GOP view came from Benson himself in an NBC televised interview, and the other was expressed by former Democratic national chairman Stephen A. Mitchell in a speech at La Salle. 111. Mitchell is a newcomer to the political feuding over farm prices which has been going on for some weeks. Benson, who has been doin< most of defending of administration policy, was joined over the weekend by Vice President .Richard M. Nixon who made a *x>uple of farm policy speeches in the midwest. Like Benson before him, Nixon

made <it clear that the administration —at least for the time being—will not back away from its determination to ride out the political storm with its chief reliance on flexible price supports. In the TV interview on "Youth Wants to Know,” Benson went further than he has heretofore by saying ‘‘there is not going to be any great depression in the farm belt.” The secretary asserted that he is perfectly willing for his hand- ■ ling of the department to become part of the battleground ' for the 1956 election campaigns. But he added: ‘‘l feel very strongly that the whole farm problem is so important that it should never be manipulated to serve partisan political purposes.” Benson again sidestepped ques- ' tions about details of his announced intention to ask congress next year for additional legislation to meet the farm price problem. All he would say was that more , flexibility is needed in the eotton program, more emphasis on soil ■ conservation, plus incentives to i farmers to put more land into grass. > Meanwhile" senate Democratic > leader Lyndon Johnson declared i in Texas that under the Eisenhoyv- • er administration's farm program, - only the money lenders are mak- ! ing a profit. x la a jibe at Benson, the majority » leader asserted: “Farm prices i have been "Bcnsonized” to a point where about the only profitable i crop consists of the mortgages
