All of which means the Yanks ' can do it if they lose only one I more of their, remaining ten games while the Indians drop two of their eight. , If the Yankees drop twx> instead, a playoff will ensue. But Stengel doesn't think his boys will lose another game from here on in with the kind of pitching he has had since Sunday. Larsen’s route job was the fourth straight for Yankee pitching, behind complete games by Tommy Byrnp, Whitey i Ford and Bob Turley. The Cleveland setback brought ! the White Sox back, to within four games of first place although the Sox lost. 8 to 2, before taking the second game at Baltimore, 6 to 0. Boston remained games out on a 7 to 3 loss to Kansas City. National League champion Brooklyn lost its fourth straight, 3 to 0. at St. Louis and Milwaukee toppled New York. 9 to 2. in the only N. L. games scheduled. In notching his eighth win and seventh since his July 30 recall from Denver, Larsen had shaky first and ninth innings. He was hit for two runs in each, the last pair on Charley Maxwell’s home run. Gil McDougald slammed a homer in the first inning and kayoed loser Ned Garver with a run producing triple in the second. Hank Baner also homered for the Yanks. In beating the Indians for the 13th time in 22 meetings, the Senators chased Herb Score and handed ace reliefer Ray Narleski his first defeat in ten decisions. Before departing in the seventh, Score struck out nine to break a 45-year-old major league record. He ran his strikeout total for the FOR ATHLETES FOOT Use T-4-L for 3 to 5 days. Yanks Hopeful Staley To Aid In Flag Chase By JOHN BARRINGTON (I. N. S'. Sports Editor) (NEW YORK (INS) —ln the present confusing American League pennant scramble, any bits of base ball flotsam and Jetsam may hold the key to the championship. Thue the New York Yankees consider money well risked the 110,000, or perhaps slightly more, they spent to press a waiver claim for ex-St. Louis and Cincinnati right hander Gerry Staley. Staley, a 32-y ear-old veteran, was one of the class pitchers of the National League Just two short years ago. However, he has fallen on evil days because of arm trouble. He had a 7-13 record for the Cards in 1954 and only a 5-8 mark this season. More significant, his earned run averages were, respectively. 5.25 and 4.65, Still, help has come from stranger quarters, and nobody knows it better than the Yankees. Witness theiit previous National League reclamation projects-the Johnnies Mizs, Hopp. Sain and Schmitz. Ewell Black well, Jim Konstanty and Enos Slaughter. The Yankees might have made their annual “old folds" grab from the other league a little earlier but for a quirk in the rules. When the New York Giants put Sal Maglie us for grabs, the Yanks reportedly were as much interested as the Cleveland Indians. • Under the rules, waiver choices begin with the lowest team in the standings and progress upward. The Indians claimed Maglie between games of a doubleheader when they were percentage points behind the Yanks. They regained first place after the second game, but by then, they had Sal the Barber. . ' ( If it is any consolation to the Yankees, Maglie has been no great boon to the Indians. A well pitched stint or two by Staley here in the stretch could more than balance the scales. Possibly, it is too late for anything to help the Yanks now. Os the four teams they have, until rdbently. been serious contenders. Casey Stengel has had to make do with the worst pitching. He has been able to dip down to the minors and come up with more help-in the shape of Don Larsen and Rip Coleman-than any of his rivals could muster. ' Here in September, Larsen and 35-year-old Tommy Byrne, who has made one of the biggest comebacks of the year, have become the Yankee strong men. Together with Bob Turley, who has rediscovered his

National Amateur Finals Saturday RICHMOND, Va. (INS) — Cofavorites Harvie Ward Jr„ and Jo® Conrad lead a field of 16 today into the fifth round of the national amateur golf tournament at Richmond. Keeping in hot contention for the coveted crown were three collegians — Joe Campbell, the national college champion from Purdtae, Jake Howard Jr., of Georgia, and Hillman ißobbina, 1954 intercollegiate champion from Memphis. Two more 18 hole rounds will be played today with the semi-finals eeheduled for Friday and the finals Saturday. Ward, San Francisco auto salesman, and Conrad, who holds the British amateur crown, scored convincing wins in the morning and afternoon rounds. Ward ousted Gordon Stott of New York, 5 and 3, and Rex Baxter of AmareHo. Tex., 6 and 4, while Conrad downed 'Edwin Collett Vare of Yale, 4 and 3, and Bob Gardner of New York. 3 and 1. Campbell eliminated Ed Meister, 4-3, and Arthur Hoff, La Grange, 111., 2 up. Earlier Meister upset Walker cup captain Bill Campbell of Huntington, W. Va„ 4-3. Willie Turnesa. winner of the event in 1938 and 1948, fell before Bob McCall, of Canfield, O„ 4-3. Freshman-Sophomore Game Here Tonight The freshman-sophomore team of the Decatur Yellow Jackets will play Portland at 6:30 o'clock this evening at Worthman field in this city. No admission will be charged and the public is invited to see the freshman-sophomore teams in action. Billy Thom Named To State Position INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — Former Indiana University wrestling coach Billy Thom today took over the job of building a physician rehabilitation program for Indiana's 20,000 patients and inmates. The Indianapolis spores promoter was named to the newly created $9,000 a year post of state director of institutional physical education and recreation by Goy. George N. Craig late Wednesday. Sees Million Dollar Theater Fight Gate NEW YORK (INS) — The head of theater network television claims the first million dollar gate for closed circuit TV is a virtual certainty for next Tuesday’s Rocky Marciano-Archie Moore title fight President Nath£n L. Halpern based his estimate on the advance ticket sales of 128 theaters in 92 cities. The Yankee Stadium bout will be carried over the largest closed circuit TV network in history beginning at 10:30 p.m. (EDT) next Tuesday, control, and Whitey Ford, they give the Yanks a passable “Big Four." Bullpen wise, Stengel’s picture is not so cheerful. For a man who doesn't like to be fenced in when it comes to juggling players, this is a tragic state of affairs. Time and again, the Yankees have blown big leads because the second echelon troops could not step in and do the sort of relief jobs the Indians have come to take for granted from'Ray Narleski and Don Mossi. But Sain had three fat years as a reliefer and spot starter for the Yanks after he had been counted washed up in the National League. It could happen to Staley. Casey Stengel and his friends hope that it does. “MAJOR - LEAGUE « Club W. L. Pct. G.B.
