West Germans Hail Adenauer On Return Home Cheer Chancellor Adenauer On Return From Moscow Talks BONN (INS) —Chancellor Konrad Adenauer returned home from Moscow today to an unprecidentad welcome by 10,000 Germans who cheered and wept when be Mid German prisoners of war soon are to be released by Russia. An old woman kissed him and clung to him as he stepped to the microphone and said: "To you here and everywhere who have relatives in Rumls, I have important news that the Soviet premier assured me Tuesday night that even before ( arrived in Bonn the process for releasing your famdies would be under way. "I do not doubt the sincerity of his words.” Adenauer won the promise from Soviet premier Marshal Nikolai Bulganin in an agreement whereby diplomatic relations will be reestablished between Bonn and Moscow. German political parties still ewer studying the results of the historic talks beween the two World War II enemies before announcing their reaction. Adenauer told the huge crowd at Wahn airport near Cologne that “it was no easy conference and we will have an opportunity to talk further about political and other subjects." He said: “The Soviet premier also promised 'that if additional Gwstaan Nationals are found to be In Russia the Soviet government will make every effort to find them and repariafe them. He assured me that the release promise also applied to them.. • The Germans officially have estimated that 50,000 to 100.000 Germajts are behind the Iron Curtain, but the Russians have contended that the only ones they hold are 9,688 “war criminals. ’’ ” Hence there is no way of determining how many actually will be released by the Russians "We thank you," went up a shout as Adenauer stepped from the Luftthansa plane at Wahn airport. Members of the cabinet and the diplomatic corps were on hand ib greet Adenauer at the airport which was decerated with some 12,000 dehlias. The crowd of 10.000 was the largest ever seen at the airport and police had difficulty controlling the crowd. Government quarters regarded as a success the fact that Adenauer got the Russians to agree to release German prisoners of war without being forced to discuss the issue with the East German Communist regime. While Adenauer was at the microphone at the airport, Carlo Schmid gave the first clue to the nature of the "further talks” which Adenauer said would be held with the Russians. Schmid, who was a member of the delegation to Moscow and is deputy chairman of the lower palliameutary house's foreign ala firs committee, said that the Soviets told Adenauer that "as soon as diplomatic relations are established the way would be free for reunification talks4'.
