Jackets Open Grid Schedule Friday Night Friday is the big night for Decatur football fans as Bob Worthman unveils the 1955 version of the Yellow Jackets. The opponents for the season opener are the always-hard-to-beat Auburn Red Devils. The northern lads, who operated for many successful years under the coaching of ■ Zeke" Young, will have a new coach and many new faces, and as Decatur teams of the past can verify, will have plenty of spirit. The local gridders haven’t been able to beat an Auburn team since Kenny Grant, Sammy Bogner and company did it back in the fall of 1948. This just might be the year though, as coach Wortbman has a group of boys who are really hustling. This year’s backfield of Tony Kelly at quarterback. Bill Roth at right half. Rocky Strickler at fullback and Gene Baxter holding down left half, is the best balanced bunch of runners around town for many a year. Both Strickler and Baxter are hard runners who take and give a lot of bumps. Roth has shown flashes of being an outstanding break-away runner, and given a block, can go all the way any time. Kelly is an exceptional passer and is also a good runner and can keep the opposition looae by running the option play. This quartet of backs boast two seniors, Roth and Strickler, and two juniors, and averages 160 pounds. Every football student knows that regardless of what kind of backfield a team can field, they won’t be a good team without a good blocking line. Jerry Leits, Yellow Jacket line coach, has assembled a good, hard working forward wall. While the offensive unit of the “up front" boys averages only 165 pounds, they can all move well and block hard. Terry Murphy, a 6-2, 190 pound senior, bolds down left end, and is showing in practice that he’s no boy to mess with. Big “Murph" is a good pass catcher and can run, either around or over, afer he gets the ball. John- Hebble, 5-11. 1-75. and a sophomore, is at left tackle. Leroy Martin, 5-8, 135 pound senior is the left guard. This wiry lineman makes up 20 or 30 pounds in hid scrappy attitude and any opposition figuring to run him in the ground is in for quite a surprise. Dan Krueckebreg, a 5-11, ilso pound senior, and Dewayne Agler, a 5-8, 160 pound junior, at center and right guard, are both experienced veterans from last year’s team. Jon Corey, 5-11, 195 pound senior is the right tackle, and Ted Hut-ker, 541, 150 pound sophomore is at right end. “Huk" can move well, and fast and is a good pass grabber. The defensive line shows a little more weight as it averages 177 pounds. From left to right are Murphy, Corey, Martin, John Isch, a 5-10, 225 pound junior, Hebble, and Stanley Kirkpatrick, a rangy 5-11, 145 pound junior. Fred Schott, a 5-8, 165 pound junior goes in on defense Jor center Dan Krueckebreg and joins Rocky Strickler as the line backer. Roth and Baxter play defensive halfbacks, and Tony Kelly is the safety man. The defensive backfield •averages 160 pounds. . The big thing for this or any football team is spirit. The game Friday will begin at 7:30. Anyone who can’it make it to the game can get the score at 10 o’clock by calling 3-2171. ‘
