NATO Council Meets To Study Cyprus Crisis Meets At Request Os Greece To Study Tension In Cyprus PARIS (INS) — The North Atlantic treaty organization’s permanent council met in Paris today at Greek request in a “special private session** to discuss GrecoTurkish tension and hostility over Cyprus. The Turkish government assured the council that*every measure has been taken to avert a repetition of Tuesday’s violent anti-Greek riots in Istanbul and IzmV- The Turkish government termed the riots "regrettable.** An Athens dispatch said the chairman of the union of Greek shipowners instructed the captains of all Greek line freighters and vessels to avoid calling at Turkish ports for the time being. It was learned that the Turkish liner Ordu, which was due at Piraeus in Greece today, cancelled the call. Piraeus Harbor authorities also were informed that the Turkish liner Ankara due Sept. 12 has been diverted. The dispute over the future of the Mediterranean Irland ruled, by Britain threatened to crack the defense wai lof the Atlantic pact nations in southeast Europe. The Athens government already has Informed the NATO naval command. in_ the Mediterranean that as a result of the tension Greek naval units may not take part in the exercises scheduled to begin Sept. 22. The tripartite Balkan pact among Greece, Turkey and Yugoslavia also was shaken by the boiling over of the long simmering problem into anti-Greek violence in Turkey and anti-Turk violence in Greece. The Greek general staff informed the Turkish and Yugoslav general staffs that Greece would not participate in the military experts meeting scheduled to be held in Ankara later this month. Today’s meeting of the council was summoned by Lord Ismay, NATO secretary general at the request of the Greek delegate. The latter will present a detailed .report on the damages to Greek property in Ismir during the riots Wednesday night. The Turkish government—which has placed Izmir, Istanbul and Ankara under martial law — also will present its views at the council session. -There were reports that Greece was looking- to the U. S. for quick diplomatic action to prevent the threatened collapse of the Balkan alliance. Britain agreed to give Cyprus limited self government during the London talks. Greece wanted a promise of self determination for the Cypriots—four fifths of whom are of Greek descent. Turkey preferred the status quo be maintained with British rule insuring protection of the 100,000 Turkish j descended minority. Three Are Dead In Truck-Train Crash Seven Others Hurt In Ohio Accident Chillicothe, O. (INS) —Three persons were killed and seven injared in a truck-train collision at a grade crossing near Chillicothe Wednesday night. cars of the Baltimore and Ohio express train were derailed, and the truck was demolished. Some 300 feet—Of track ■were torn up. The dead, all occupants of the truck, were killed instantly. Police said they were tentatively identified as Dave Raynor, . Lowell Speakman and Pete Baker, all of near Wellston, O. The accident occurred just be-k fore dark some' two and -a half 1 miles east of Wellston. Police said the grade crossing was equipped with blinker warning signals. There were no passengers on | the train, which was en route from Parkersburg. }V. Va.. to Cincinnati. Five of the injured, all members of the train cr< w, were hospitalized. Two of them. Frederick Davis, 59. conductor of Newark, 0.. and postal clerk Wayman MeCullough, 54, of Greenneld. O. weie trapped in the baggage car. Wreckage had to-be removed before they could - 'be- rescued. Others’hospitalized were Stanton Sims, 61. postal clerk of Parkersburg. W. Va.. injuries to head and right arm; Lowell MtiiVjn, 43, brakeman of McArthur. 0.. dislocated shoulder; Russ Abel, 62, postal clerk of Parkersburg, head lacerations and back injury. Ardley Miller, 65. engineer, and Charles Shock. 38. both of Chillicothe. O„ were treated at the Irr pibal aud released.
