Miss Ruth Alice Holthouse Is Married This Morning To Jerome John O’Powd The marriage of Mins Ruth AUse Holthouse of- Decatur and Jerome John O’Dowd of Fort Wayt»t< was solemnized at 9:30 a.m. today in the Notre Dame University Lbg Chapel at South Bend. The bride in the daughter of Mrs Arthur R. Holtbouse of Marshall street and the late Mr. Holthonse, editor of the Decatur Dully Democrat. Mr. O'Dowd is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. O'Dowd.
The Rev. John A. O’Brien, read the nuptial vows. Attending the bridal couple were Miss Patricia McComb of Fort Wayne and Richard J. O’Dowd, brother of the bridegroom. > The bride was attired in a street length frock of pastel blue. Her ensemble was accented with an orchid corsage. The wedding party and members of the immediate families of the couple were guests at a wedding breakfast following the ceremony. The breakfast took place at Morris Inn in South Bend. For traveling south, the bride wore a moss green costume suit. When Mr. and Mrs. O’Dowd return they will reside at 1802 Kensington boulevard in Fort Wayne. The bride is a graduate of Decatur high school. She attended the College of New Rochelle, N. "Y., and was graduated from Indiana university. Last year she was a teacher in the Decathr public echool system. Her husband is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame college of law and is an associate in the Fort Wayne legal firm of Niezer and O'Dowd. MISS FLORENCE SHADY WEDS JAMES BRENTLINGER On August 27, at 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon, Mias Florence Mae Shady became the bride ot-Jame* Loren Brentlinger. The doublering ceremony took place in the Millgrove Methodist church with the Rev. Harley T. Shady, father Cf the bride, officiating. Parents of the couple are ißev. and Mrs. Harley T. Shady of Millgove and Mr. and Mrs. Ora Lionel Brentlinger of 1110 West Monroe street in Decatur. The musicale was presented by Mrs. Norval Fuhrman, pianist; and Mrs. Bill Brentlinger and Miss Grace Fuhrman, vocalists. The bride wore a ballerina length gown of white net and lace over white satin. The strapless lace and net bodice over white satin, was topped w-ith a jacket of lace with a small round collar and long sleeves tapering to a point over her wrists. She wore a white lace cap trimmed with seed pearls and carried a white Bible topped with white white roses and baby mums. She is a 1954 graduate of Parkview Methodist school of nursing. For the past year she has been employed at the Putnam county hospital. Her husband was graduated from Monmouth high school and is a senior at Purdue University. After a trip to northern Indiana the couple will reside at 9 North Tenth street In Lafayette METHODIST W.S.C.S. TO BEGIN FALL MEETINGS The Methodist W.S.C.S. Will begin their new fall meetings Thursday. September 8. at 2 o’clock at the church, with a quiet hour proceeding the meetings. This will mark the 15th anniversary of the organization.. Charter members will be especially honored and all members are urged to attend. A group meeting of the organization will be held September 14, at the Methodist church. The Women's Guild of the Zion E. and R. church will have their opening meeting Wednesday evening, with a carry in supper at 6:30 o’clock. The meat, rolls, butter, and coffee will be furnished by the hostesses. The Gals and Pals home demonstration club will meet with Mrs. James Myers Tuesday evening at 7:30 o'clock. Hayride And Weiner Bake By Rural Youth A hayride and Weiner bake will be featured at the Thursday night Adams count rural youth meeting. AU rural youthers will meet at 7:30 p. m. at the county extension office in the basement of the De-catur-post office sor z a short business meeting and then take off on the hayride. During the business session, the members will have an opportunity to suggest activities and program ideas for next year’s program. Presents Chairs And Cash To 4-H Clubs Washington township presented the Adams county 4-H clubs with $38.49 and 4» metal folding chairs. The car driven by Arthur Dale Beer of Berne was slightly damaged when struck by a car driven by Floyd Belberstine of Blufton, Thursday on Market street In Bluffton. The Berne-French schools show an enrollment of 704, an increase of 13 over last year. The list includes 342 girls and 382 boys. A total of 1,893 pupils enrolled in the Portland schools Thursday. Superintendent Wilier said the number was slightly below last year. -Kindergarten had 53. W. E. Hostetter, who for many years has published the Ossian Journal, is in serious condition as the result of a stroke suffered a week ago. He is a patient alt the Wells county hospital and has been unoonscious felnne the cerebral hemorrhage. Albert Keller has been nominated for mayor by the Republicans at Bluffton, who have filed a complete slaite. Mrs. Eleanor Garrett was named as a candidate for clerk-treasurer and named for councilmen: John Neff. Marvin Crandell, Frank Petzel and John Scriebe. They got in just an hour before the deadline for filing or withdrawing. -— ; Three Rabbits Are Killed In Pens Andy Bailey reported to the police last night that someone had killed three of bis rabbits and broken the leg Os a fourth one. The investigation showed that the act was intentional, as the animals are kept in pens. The animals were removed from their regular pens, killed, and then replaced in a different pen. LIBRARY NEWS By the Librarian The Summer Reading Project closed the evening of August 31st. This has been a splendid summer and like the bAst wavp the greatest in our history. Our circulation for the three summer months totaled 16, 719 books. The records for the children have been carefully cheeked with the following resuHs:— Ist and 2nd grades wil Ireceiye 145 diplomas. 3rd and 4th grades will receive 98 diplomas. Ist and 2nd grades will receive 72 diplomas. 7th, ?th and U.S. will receive 43 diplomas. Adams Central bad 16 to receive diplomas. Monmouth had 17 to receive diplomas. Immanuel Lutheran had 4. There were four visitors to receive diplomas, Karen Bixler, Anderson, Judy Denny, Kokomo and Bobbie and Katrinka Rucker, Irving, Texas. There will be 85 diplomas issued to adults who have rend three non fiction books for a child, thus giving the child a gold candle. You will be Interested In seeing the lovely cakes that have been decorated with the candles that represented the reading of the books. Bambi will be awarded to the first and second grades for they are far ahead of any other group. Banners will be awarded to grades having the most to complete. Monmouth won this year by one over Adams Central. We appreciate the interest taken by everyone in this reading project and feel sure there are 348 Johnnies In Decatur who know how to read. Perhaps Rudolph Flesch who wrote the book “Why Johnny can’t Read” should come to Decatur. In the library we are sure there are many good readers among our children. The Library will be closed all day Labor Day, Monday, Sept. sth. Beginning Tuesday the Library will open at noon and remain open until 8:30 every week day. Alan Ray Roth wrote to us from Richburg. South Carolina. He and his parents have had a trip through the Smokies. Catherine Stalter writes from Pittsburgh, Pa. They are going on to the Moose Convention in Philadelphia. Thomas Staub Is enjoying the beautiful scenery in Kentucky. Paul Rich writes from Oklahoma. They have had a trip through that state and Kansas. They enjoyed the Will Rogers display in Claremore. Jimmy Leonard has attended the fair in Marion, Ohio. Annette Thomas visited in HamUlton, Ohio. Democrat Candidates Will Meet Wednesday Democratic candidates for city Offices, members of the Democratic city committee and officers will meet at Democrat headquarters next Wednesday night at 8 o’clock, Bernard Clark, chairman, and Mrs. Everett Hutker, vicechairman, announced today. Plans will be made for all candidates to canvas the city and preliminary plans for several meetings and teas also will be discussed. i; . , Clark will preside at the meeting and candidates will be asked to assist in planning the campaign. All Democrat candidates have asserted they plan active campaigns. Mrs. Laura Bosse Renamed To Board Mrs. Laura A. Bosse was re-ap-pointed to the Decatur public library board for a four-year term by Judge Myles Parrish Friday. DEATH OF HEIRESS (Continued from Faws On«> could not have done It herself. The substance eventually entered the girl’s blood stream, went to her lungs and caused death by asphyxia and lung collapse. Dr. Jacob Hoffman, a prominent gynecologist, told the inquest that Mrs. Silver brought Doris to his office on Aug. 22. He examined the girl and found a “possible pregnancy of about six or seven weeks." On that occasion, and when they returned, Hoffman said Mrs. Sliver “was not happy” and asked: "Can’t you uo anything for her?” Hoffman said he was determined to “preserve the pregancy of that girl,” so on the 24th he gave her a fake “placebo" injection and some hormone pills. He said the hormone pills would have retained her pregancy rather than terminated It. Although the police promised thorough investigation, they said there would be no arrests until there was an iron clad case.
