Four From County Join Marine Corps Leave Wednesday To Begin Training Three Decatur young men and one from Monroe who enllnted In the Sumihit City platoon of the United States marine corpe, were flown from Indianapolis Wednesday to the marine corps recruit depot at San Diego, Calif. All enlisted for a four-year pei> iod. They will undergo 10 weeks of recruit training at San Diego, followed by four weeks of individ-
ual combat training at Camp Pendleton. Calif. The young men who left Wednesday were Robert John Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmo C. Street Sweeper Is Demonstrated Here The Gutter-Snipe, a street sweep er manufactured by the Municipal Supply Co. of South Bead was demonstrated for city officials Wedt nesday afternoon in Decatur. Like the Wayne sweeper which ■ has been demonstrated here, the Gutter-Snipe features rear wheel steering. However, It is smaller I than the Wayne, having a hopper , capacity of only two cubic yards as compared with Wayne s three cubic yards. The maenlne demonstrated here yesterday is the one owned by the city of Garrett. Another company, the AustinWestern of Aurora, 111., has also indicated that it intends to submit a bid on the city’s purchase of a mechanical sweeper. The AustinWestern. which has front steer ing. was demonstrated here several years ago. Junior Miss Indiana Contest At Bluffton Will Hold Contest During Street Fair BLUFFTON. Ind.— The eighth annual Junior Miss Indiana pageant for the selection of the "moat beautiful and talented teen-aged” girl in the state will be held at Bluffton, September 22 and 23. The state-wide contest for the naming of Indiana’s junior queen will be climaxed during ths 45th Annual Bluffton free street fair, September 20 to 24. The 1955 queen will succeed Miss Rose Marie Glasgow of Winchester, who was crown ed last fall. In order to qualify for the teenage beauty and talent contest. It is necessary to be a' resident of Indiana. single (never having been married) and not lese than 16 or more than 20 years of age. ( Arrangements for the staging of the beauty pageant are in charge of the beauty contest committee of the street fair association, with Ed James, of Bluffton, as chairman. Candidates in past years have been variously sponsored by organizations of their home cities. Woman Is Killed In One-Car Accident KENDALLVILLE, Ind. (INS)— Ellen Gilliam. 38, with addresses in both Pontiac, Mich., and Fort Wayne, Ind., was killed today in a one car accident on U.S. 6 in DeKalb county. Silas Sheppard. 27, of Angola. Ind., was reported in serious condition. J Police said Sheppard lost control ’ on a curve and the car rolled 200 ■ feet. Two Minor Mishaps Reported By Police A car driven by Gordon D. Conrad, Goshen, was struck at the intersection of Thirteenth and Monroe strets by a truck operated by Artie E. Davison of Dallas, Texas. Conrad had for the signal light and his car was damaged | when Davison made too wide a , turn onto Monroe street. Damages, were limited to the Conrad auto and were estimatad at $35. A parked car owned by the Berne Oil Co. Suffered a broken tail-light when struck by an auto driven byHoward Gehrig of Decatur. Gehrig was leaving a parking place when the accident happened and his car suffered a broken headlight. (Glen E. Stevens, route four, Huntington, was arested yesterday for passing at the intersection of Eighth and Monroe streets. Stevens was fined $1 and cost, totaling $15,75. Lions Will Resume Meetings Sept. 12 Frank Lybarger, president of the Decatur Lions Club, has announced that the weekly dinner meetings of the club will take place at the new Youth and Community Center. He has also announced that the club membership has voted to change its meeting night from Tuesday to Monday. The next meeting of tile club will be held Monday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p. m. The purpose of the change of meeting nights was to avoid conflict with several other Tuesday night activities in Decatur. Railroad Workman Is Killed By Train MARION. Ind. (INS) Thirty-four-year old Marvin Francis Wright, Terre Haute, was killed Wednesday when he was struck by a freight train near Marion. He was a Pennsylvania railroad section workman. <
