Says Reds Catching Up In Air Strength Air Force Chief In Address To VFW BOSTON (INS) — Gen. Nathan F. Twining said today that "Sqvlet aircraft production is catching up to ours fast—not only in quantity but in quality.? The air force chief of staff declared that “if we lot the Reds catch up in air power, you may be certain that a Soviet attack would be more likely than it is ndSr." Twining, addressing the sSth national encampment of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said the U.S. today is “ahead, well ahead" in airpower, and that "we can now promise to destroy so many attacking planes that an aggressor would have to gamble on losing a high proportion of his force.” But the air chief said "a flood of aircraft is streaming from the aviation arsenals of the Soviet Union.” He continued: "This new Soviet uirpower holds far more potential danger than the mightiest hurricane. This could pour out of the Soviet Union to engulf and overwhelm not only cities and states but our entire nation.” Twining said that “the battle for preparedness is getting harder instead of easier.” In elaborating this point, he stressed the need for pilots and mechanics as well as planes. The general said that at more than 200 air force bases there is a “really critical housing situation,” and that “mediqal facilities at every base are overtaxed and lack funds." He said that more than 100 bases “are short of the operational facilities that atr effective air force must have." At the same time, Twining promised rapid improvement in America's already highly effective air defense. He said fighter planes today w-ould shoot down attacking bombers with machine guns and rockets, whereas within a year much faster planes in the 'supersonic speed range will be using guided missiles for the same purpose.
