Balance Attempted On Farm Operation Many Factors In Reaching Answers WASHINGTON (INS) —The Fedarel Reserve System tried today to strike a balance on farm operation* in 1964 to show how farmers* asset* stacked up against their liabilities at the beginning of this year. A» was to be expected, the socalled balance sheet of agriculture points up some good factors and some bad. Here, in broad outline, is bow the report viewed the financial position of farmers in general: There were Increases in 1964 in the value of farm real estate, stored crops, household furnishings and equipment, and in financial assets such as savings and stocks and bonds. These gains were offset to some Extent by declining value of live stock, machinery and motor vehicles on farms. The overall decrease in livestock value resulted both from a decline in prices of some types and the fact that there were fewer lumbers of other types. On machinery and automobiles, the rate of depreciation was greater than the amount spent on new purchases. Farm debt for the production of crops had declined in 1963, but it tnrned upward again last year, especially when account is taken of the value of crops placed under government price support loans. (Mortgages on farm real estate increased for the ninth year ip a row and'Agricultural indebtedness of,ail kinds went up by 900 million dollars during the year. As of Jan. 1 ft stood at 13 billion dollars. The report noted, however, that the increase in total debt was less than the increase in the value of farm assets so that farmers’ equities rose slightly during the year.
