Crop Production May Equal Record Multiply G.O.P/s Farm Price Problem WASHINGTON (INS) —lndications that total 1955 crop production will equal the all time record bid fair to multiply the Elsenhower administration's farm price problem. The August crop report, based on start of the month conditions, indicated that the crop reporing board was cnsiderably off base in Its predictions a month ago with respect to a number of major crops, notably wheat and corn. . On a crop by crop basis here Is how the situation now stacks up. Corn — The current forecast is three billion, T7B million bushels, or approximately 28 million bushels above the July 1 prediction. The crop is predicted to be the second largest of record. Wheat —The Aug. 1 prediction is that production of alt wheat will be 911 million bushels. This is an increase of more than 50 million bushels from the July 1 forecast, although the crop would be six per cent smaller than the 1954 crop. Oats —The current estimate is on billion, 635 million bushelsan all time high, and eight per cent larger than last year's crop. Soy beans—The 1965 harvest Is expected to exceed the 400 million bushel level for the first time and present conditions point to a crop of as much as 420 million bushels. This would be 23 per cent larger than last year's harvest. Cotton—ln a separate report earlier this week, the agriculture department estimated that the 1965 cotton crop will be 12 million, 728 thousand bales. The national acreage allotment set up at the beginning of this year was intended to produce no more than ten million bales, but favorable growing conditions and heavy use of fertilizer have resulted in prospects for an exceptional increase in yields per acre. All in all, the crop reporting board now figures that total production this year will equal the previous record established in 1948. This would multiply farm problems in at least two directions. Jt would place increased stress on the commodity credit corporations price support prgrams. CCC has obtained authorization from congress to expand its lending authority from ten billion to twelve billion dollars, but the super abundance now In prospect might push total loan commitments near the new ceiling within a relatively short time. Secondly, there is the continuing problem of Storage space. CCC has been authorized to expand its own storage capacity to sme extent and the department, over a period of some weeks, has been urging farmers o increase their own capacity for taking adequate care so incoming crops.

Dutch Elm Disease Exacts Heavy Toll Many Elm Trees In County Destroyed The Dutch Elm disease' a fungus growth believed to be carried to the trees by beetles, has exacted a heavy toll throughout Adams county, a survey shows. Many large Decatur trees have been killed by the disease, and usually discovery is toft late to save the tree. Lumber buyers say there is some salvage to the dead trees, ; but only part (A the diseased tree contains salvage lumber. Usually the first several inches have to be cut away before lumber can be sawed out. Elm lumber is used to- make light crates, boxes and hoops, it was said by lumber men, and at present the market is flooded with elm lumber because the Dutch Elm disease is pretty general through the middlewest. It is estimated that about 50 trees have been completely destroyed in Decatur and probably 400* or 500 have died in the county. Spraying if started early enough can save the trees, it was learnde. Usually the disease is not discovered until it is too late.
