Rockford Telephone 280 W. 179 3t-x Closed Shop Pact Attacked In Suit I Claim Violation Os State Constitution INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — A suit has been filed in Indianapolis attacking a closed shop provision of i the new General Motors Corpora-I tion contract with the CIO-UAW. 1 George Rose filed the suit in behalf of V. R. Smith, who works at the Allison division In Indianapolis and 200 other non - union workers at GM plants in Indianapolis and Anderson. x The suit asks injunction against firing non-union workers who refuse to join the UAW by Aug. 26 as required by the contract, which Rose claims violates the Indiana constitution. Meanwhile, in Detroit, General | Motors Corp, began notifying near- j ly 18,000 workers today that they must join the CIO United Auto Workers Union by Aug. 26 or face dismissal. Notices were being sent to nonunion hourly employes informing them of provisions in the new three year agreement with the UAW which calls for a union shop. The contract states that nonunion workers must join the UAW within 90 days of the effective date of the agreement Only about five per cent of the hourly workers were not union members before i the pact was signed, the corporation said. In 18 states employes are exempted from joining the union because of “right to work" laws that prohibit closed or union shops. The UAW also exempts employes whose religious beliefs forbid them to belong to a union.
