Top American Teams All Win Friday Night NEW YORK (INS) -The pitchers are going all out to break up the tightest American League pennant race in 16 years. The Chicago White Sox called on Virgil Trucks to keep them in first place Friday night and the 36 year old righthander responded by pitching g, six hit, 5 tp 2 victory over Washington. Whitey Fond kept the New York Yankees within two percentage points of the top by pitching a five hit. 3 to 2 decision over Kansas City and socking the fire home run of his major league carter. Big Mike Garcia threw a brilliant four hitter for Cleveland as the Indians topped Baltimore, 7 to 1, and stayed one game off the pace. And Willard Nixon tossed another four hitter as Boston cooled of Detroit, 5 to 0, and remained two games back of the Indians. The superb performances left the status quo except for the fifth place Tigers, who dropped 6ft games back. Not since 1940, when Detroit won the flag two days before the season ended, has there been such a wide open race. Trucks notched his 10th win against only three losses when the White Sox rammed home three runs In the ninth on singles byNelson Fox and Walt Dropo. Jim Rivera's double, a walk to Shernl Lollar and Bobby Adams' safety. . Ford, going the distance for the first time since July 1. gained his 12th verdict against five defeats when Joe Collins hit a run scoring pinch single in tire eighth inning. Enos Slaughter had tied it up in the eighth with a pinch homer after Ford's seventh inning blast off Vic Rasch i. Garcia struck out five and walked four while posting his seventh win in 17 decisions at Baltimore. Larry Doby, with three singles in three at bats, and Vic Wertz, who hit his 11th home run. led the Tribe's 15 hit attack. 1 Nixon did not issue a walk nor permit a runner past second while chalking up his 10th win and third shutout of the season. Ted Wi7liarns gave the Boston righthander all the advantage he needed by clouting his 17th homer in the first inning. -—Clßeinnati Smoky Burgess stole the National League spotlight by driving in nine runshigh for the major league seasonwith three home runs against Pittsburgh. The Redlegs won. 16 to 5. Brooklyn held its 12ftgame advantage by nosing out St. Louis, a to 4. and Milwaukee left New York 16ft games in arrears by whipping the G-iants, 5 to 2. Philadelphia topped Chicago, 6 to 4. in the only day game. Burgess, who also singled, clouted a pair of two run homers and then belied his second grand slam of the season as he came, within three RBl’s of the major league record of 12 set by Jim Bottomley of the 1924 Cardinals. He missed a record tying fourth homer by inches as Roberto Clemente backed up against the right field screen at Crosley Field to pull down a long drive. The trio gave him a total of 16 for the year. The 22 hit assault against Vernon Law, Max Surkont and Pepper Laurin, each of whom were tapped for Burgess homers, including a grand slam by Bob Thurman and a solo poke by rookie Milt Smith. Joe Nuxhall wielded 11 hits, including a three run round tripper by Frank Thomas,. in posting his 10th win. * Don Hoak's three run homer in the seventh inning tied it up for Brooklyn and Carl Furillo’s eighth inning double, which bounced off Bill Virdon's glove to score Jim Gilliam, won it. Virdon had hit his 12th homer off starter Karl Spooner. New York's 20 game winner and World Series hero, Johnny Antonelli, lost his 13th against eight wins when the Braves scored three times in the first inning. Singles by Bill Bruton and Johnny Logan, a triple by Ed Mathews and a sacrifice fly by Hank Aaron, supplied the punch for Ray Crone and 40,492 spectators at County Stadium. The Phillies snapped a three game losing streak and bagged their 15th win id the last 19 games when they pushed over four runs in the ninth inning *on two hits-one a double by Glen Gorbous which sailed over the charging Bob Speake, a walk and sacrifice fly. Mayo Smith sent in his ace, Robin Roberts, to pitch the ninth and preserve the win for Saul Rogovin. Ernie Banks collected his 30th homer for the Cubs and Willie Jones his 13th for the Phils.
