Only Miracle To Keep Flag From Dodgers NEW YORK CI NS) —While bargain day at (Gimbela couldn’t match the riotous proportions of the mad scramble for the American League pennant, the National League race is just about over. The Brooklyn Dodgers, weeping and wailing about their long injury list over the past month and losing every so often as they did last night at Cincinnati, nevertheless have managed to play .500 ball of late. And at that continued pace, victories in 28 of their remaining 55 games should wrap it up. .Milwaukee, New York, et a! never have been able to recover from the Dodgers, record fast getaway and, of course, there has been no coopenr.tion from within the ranks. The contenders have knocked each other off with monotonous regularity. • Even a Dodger setback like Wednesday night's ten inning. 4 to 3 decision at Crosley Field, and a subsequent full gnsne advance by the nearest, contender, fails to stir up the imagination any more. The Braves chipped the Dodgers’ lead down to a mere 12% games by beating Philadelphia. 2 to 1, Wednesday night. But the Braves and Giants will need a small miracle, or an unexpected complete collapse on the part of Brooklyn, to catch the Flatbushers. The Braves will have to play .733 ball-winning 41 while losing only 15-to catch the Brooks if the Bums play .500 ball to the wire. Under the same conditions, the world champion Giants would have to win 43 Out of 54 to hit the probable winning mark of 95 victories. That's .796 gait. Os course, Charles Grimm will never forget the 1938 season when his Chicago Cubs swept down the September stretch with 21 straight to catch the fading Pittsburgh Ptrates. And the Giants can draw sustenance fro®, the memory of 1951, when they overcame a 13% game Brooklyn-, lead to But sly»e were miracle yeariLttib lunfl'niat are far and in between. The Giants dropped 15% games behind by losing a double header, 4 to 2 and 9 to 8. to the Cubs and Harvey Haddix pitched a 6 to 1 win over the Pirates. New York's American League I lead was cut back to one game by Chicago, 7 to 4, and Boston climbed to within a game of third place Cleveland and three of the Yankees by stopping the Indians. 6 to 2, in the other daylight contest. Detroit beat Baltimore, 8 to 4; and then succumbed 8 to 7. in a twi night doubleheader and Kansas City took two from Washington. 6 to 4, in 11 innings, and 4tol.
