Their come from behind 5 to 3 triumph Thursday night over Cincinnati’s Gus Bell, who clouted three home runs, was their seventh win in the last four days and fifth in succession over the sagging Redlegs. With their modern record of eight (set in 1915 and equalled in ’53) already topped, the Phillies now are within reach of their alltime record streak of 16 straight wins, set in 1887 and equalled in 1890 and '92. And they’re also |within reach-ftust two gamies-of the third place New York iGants. "Consistently good pitching backed up by timely hitting, particularly by the lower end of the batting order, has made our streak possible,” Smith explained Thursday night “We did not have exceptionally good breaks and the breaks we got we made,” the muscular Mayo added. A quick look at the record for the most part bears out his contention. In seven of the ten games, Phillies pitchers, have the way. ~ . r • Murry Dickson pwtrt! a thifee hitter and seven hitter, including a shutout over "Milwaukee. But Smalley hit safely and we were on our way." Jim Greengrass had opened the frame with a single off Gerry Staley, Del Ennis added another and Willie Jones walked. Smalley sent home two off Art Fowler and Marv j Blaylock singled home Jones. Bell tied it up 1-1 with his first homer in the third and again 2-2 with his second blast in the fifth. He then put the Redlegs out front with homer No. 15 off Ron Negray in the eighth but flied out in the | ninth. The Brooklyn Dodgers topped Chicago. 4 to 1; the Giants edged St. Louis, 6 to 5, and Milwaukee defeated Pittsburgh. 5 to 3, in other NL gamgs-all daylight contests. 5 The American League daytime; schedule found Chicago halving New York's lead to one game. 9 to 6: Cleveland beating Washington. 4 to 3. in ten innings; Boston taking Kansas City. 4 tn 3, and Detroit’s Billy Hoeft blanking Baltimore. 1 to 0.
