Adams Rejects Invitation To i Give Testimony Senator Kefauver Not To Subpoena Ike's Assistant WASHINGTON (INS.) —Sen. Estes Kefauver (D Tenn.,) threw cold water today on the .idea of trying to subpoena presidential aide Sherman Adams to testify in the Dixon-Yates power investigation, ~~— Adams rejected an invitation to appear voluntarily before Kefauver’s judiciary subcommittee, but the Tennessee Democrat said ’he probably will make no attempt at forcing him to answer questions. Instead, the subcommittee chairman said he is pinning his hopes on a new appeal to Adams to reconsider his decision and to disclose details of his role in the now cancelled 107 million power deal. Kefauver said: "We’ll try this approach first. Frankly, I don’t think we can subpoena him and I doubt if the subcommittee will try it.” The senator recessed the subcommittee hearings until Tuesday after writing a letter to Adams charging that the administration’s decision not to supply’ Dixon-Yates contract documents “is tantamount to suppression of evidence of possible crime and corruptin.’' Kefauver referred to the refusal of the atomic energy commission, the securities and exchange commission and the budget bureau to turn over Dixon-Yates papers to the senate investigators. The three agencies declined to deliver the papers on grounds of executive secrecy. Adams said he would not testify because he could add “nothing’’ to what has already been said. He also’pleaded executive immunity. _ Anti-Gambling Law May Face Court Test Follow Impounding Os Pinball Machines ANDERSON, Ind. (INS) — The Hasbrook anti-gambling, law appears headed for a court test as a result of pinball impounding in Madison county. Prosecutor Melvin Thornburg was ordered to surrender thyee 10 cent type machines he seized at two Markleville restaurants. The Alpine Amusement Company, of Connersville, distributors throughout southeastern Indiana, was granted a temporary injunction that runs until Sept. 6, when the company will ask that it be made permanent. Thornburg said at that time he will ask its removal. He also said the Hasbrook law which permits pinball machines that reward only with “immediate replays” will be tested. He said he fears the replay is a loophole for gambling, -y ——— ~ According to the prosecutor, replays are being "sold’’ to other persons and tjiat constitutes gambling profit.
