Some Top Officials Are Dirt Farmers Secretory Benson Has No Farmlands, WASHINGTON Washington officialdom, go in for real dirt farming in a big way? Yes and no, depending on the department or agency. President Eisenhower has more or less set the pattern with his much publicized farm at Gettysburg, Pa. The President hasn’t the time of course to attend to the day to day decisions, but he keeps in close and interested touch with what’s going on up. at Gettysburg. Agriculture secretary'Ezra Taft Benson was asked recently whether Mr. Eisenhower had requested any advice from the agriculture department on managing his beef herd. Benson replied in the affirmative and said he had taken the logical course and referred the President to his county agent up at Gettysburg. The secretary went on to say that he assumed Mr. Eisenhower would get good service inasmuch as the President’s brother. Dr. Milton Eisenhower is head of Pennsylvania State university. The state extension service, of course, -operates from the university with the county agents under its jurisdiction. Benson doesn’t own any farming interests at the present time but he formerly operated a dairy farm and he has two brothers still in the business in Idaho. Other top agriculture officials are in farming one way or another. Under secretary True D. Morse owns 300 acres in Missouri devoted to pasture, corn and soy beans. His farm is leased to some one else at the present time. Earl Hughes, administrator of the commodity stabilization service, has two farms —a dairy operation in Illinois and another which is devoted to production of livestock grain, and certified seed. Milan Smith, an assistant to Benson, operates a 640 acra irrigated farm in southern Idaho producing wheat, sugar beets, potatoes. alfalfa and dry beans. Over in the treasury department, secretary George M. Humphrey has a large acreage at ThowtasvWle. Ga„ on which he i grows a few crops but actually it's more in the nature of a hunting preserve. Mr. Eisenhower has shot quail and wild turkeys there. Commerce secretary Sinclair Weeks has two farms of about 1,000 acres each. “Cat Bow” farm at Lancaster, N. H., has 50 to 60 head of Guernsey cattle and about the same number of sheep. It also some maple syrup -for sale. “Ox Bow” farm at Lune burg. Vt.. is a commercial dairying operation.
