Major League Teams Resume Play Tonight NEW YORK (INS) —The American and National League pacesetters peered nervously over their shoulders at a couple of onrushing contenders today as the second half of the major league baseball season began in earnest. The Boston Red,. Sox ar.d Milwaukee Braves currently are the hottest teams going and soon may be breathing down the respective backs of the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers. The Sox are in fourth place bu' their 26 victories in the last 32 gapies have pulled them to within seven games of the Yanks aud they could wind up in second place by the weekend. The Braves are 11% games back but they're closed than anybody else and threaten to move in should the Birooks falter. The Braves have played the sharpest ball id the National League lately, winning ten of 16 in the past two weeks preceding the All —Star game. Despite the Dodgers' seemingly untouchable lead, five clubs still have a chance of catching the Flatbushers if one of them can organize the peerless pitching such as the New York Giants flashed in 1951, when they overcame a 13% game deficit. For this reason and the fact that' Brooklyn’s own pitching is complicated by injuries, the Dodgers cannot afford to let up. Roy Campanella, missing from behind the plate since June 28 with an injured left knee, is ready to go again as are Carl Furillo and Sandy Amoros. But pitchers Carl Erskine, Russ Meyer, Johnny Podres and Karl Spooner still are, plagued with assorted ailments. • The Brooks, who have won only eight of their last 17, open a two game home series with St. Louis as both leagues swing into full activity tonight following the AllStar hiatus. Milwaukee begins its eastern swing at Philadelphia, the Chicago Cubs start a two game series at the Polo Grounds and Cincinnati moves over to Pittsburgh. The Yankees, who managed to snap out of their longest losing streajk in two seasons their last time out, launch a 12 game westtonight. The Bombers, nursing a modest

Cleveland Indians Sign Two Veterans CbEVELAND (INS) — The Cleveland Indians "loaded up" for an all-out assault on first place In the American League pennant race today with the acquisition of Walter "Hoot” Evers from the Baltimore Orioles and the signing of two-time loop batting king, Ferris Fain.' Fain, who came to terms Wednesday but who was scheduled to sign today, will be in uniform tonight when the Indians open an important two game series with the New York Yankees at Municipal Stadium. Evers, a right * handed hitting outfielder, was acquired from the Orioles in return for pitcher Bill Wight in a waiver deal. The 10year major league veteran has a lifetime batting average of .280, but was currently batting .238 for the Orioles. He will be used as a pinch hitter, according to Tribe officials. Tribe Manager Al Lopez said there is a possibility that Fain, released unconditionally by the Detroit Tigers last week, may be in the starting lineup tonight when Casey Stengel brings his Yankees to town with a five-game lead over the second place Indians. The formality of signing Fain was postponed until today so that the Indians could make room on their roster for the controversial first baseman. who was the league batting king in 1951 and 1952. it is expected that Joe Altobelii, weak hitting first baseman, will be sent back to the Tribe’s Indianapolis farm club. Fain has been suffering from a knee injury, but told Tribe officials he is in excellent condition. Al Rosen, a third baseman, Vic Wertz, an outfielder, and Altobelii operated at first for the Tribe this season. “I think Fain will help us to win the pennant,” said general manager Hank Greenberg.
