County Agenfs Column o 0 Field Day July 1» Hoosier farmers will learn the latest developments in the war agakist leafhopper damage on alfalfa during the annual field day at Purdue University’s sand experimental farm near Culver Tuesday afternoon, July 19. M. Curtis Wilson, Purdue entomologist, reports that in 1951, alfalfa treated to control leafhoppers avhraged 45 percent more growth two weeks after cutting than alfalfa not sprayed. Research at the Purdue sand farm indicates that leafhopper control may be a major factor in keeping a stand of alfalfa from running out, Wileon says., . Wilson’s research has shown that where leafhoppers were treated, a carryover effect on alfalfa vigor followed In the spring. Alfalfa sprayed to control leafhoppers recovered early in the spring and produced more hay per acre on the first cutting than did the unsprayed crop.
