I Comments JwJ on h LedQOBJSM Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, Habakkuh's Faith Tested, Habakkuk 1:1-6, 12 and 13; 2:1-4, for Sunday, July 10. HabakkuK was one of the minor prophets who lived during the reign of the last few kings of Judah. He mourned over the sins of Judah and could not understand God's dealings with this people. In this lesson Is seen *is cry of doubt with instruction M to where he should go with his doubts and the answer to his doubt. V.l. "The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see." The prophet was burdened with what he saw in Judah. His was a burden of souls and opened the way for a revelation of God. - V. 2. "O Lord* how long shall I cry and thou wilt not hear! even cry unto thee of violence, and ffidu *Wt not save.” The prophet was moved to tears because of the moral and social injustices of Judah. Here was the too oft expression. “If there be a God, why does he not do something about it?” Man can not see far enough beyond to judge God. V. 3. "Why dost thoft shew me iniquity. and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me; and there are that raise up strife and contention.” These words point to Judah's animosities. It God who is the supreme sovereign, and the prophet who Is the recognized spokesman of God, failed to see the iniquities described, it might be conceded that there would be good reason for Judah's neglecting the righteousness of (apd. V,4. ‘‘Therefore the law Is slacked. and judgment doth never go forth; for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.” The prophet complained that because there was no divine help given, the rulers were overcome by the forces of evH and as a result, the law was treated lightly and there was no justice, and the laws were ineffective. V. 5. “Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe. though it be told you.” The prophet calls on God to note what is happening at the hands of the. Chaldeans; however it is to be re-| Lesson Prayer: Lesson prayer; Forbid that we should become victims of doubt. We are grateful for a little faith but we- would not allow it to be dormant. Grant us courage to use the faith we have in following the line of duty as God reveals it. We thank Thee that by the victory of faith we shall have eternal life. Book Review The Pulpit Treasury of Wit and Humor. Israel H. Wiestfield, Pren-tice-Hall. Ind., N.Y., contains more than 400 stories, anecdotes and jokes giving flavor to addresses on all occasions. Do You Know: - 1. On what occasion did Jesus say. "Where is your faith?"'7 2. How was the reality of devils taught by Jesus? / '3. How did Jesus treat death in the case of Jairus' daughter? 4. V. 6. “For 10, 1 raise up the Chair deans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwelling places that are not theirs.” In verses 7 to 11 it is revealed that the Chaldeans are on 1 the inarch, gathering captives and 1 taking fortresses. L V. 12. “Artthou not from everlasting. O Lord my God, mine ' Holy One? We shall not die, O Lord, thou bast ordained them for judgment; and. O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.” In effect the prophet seems to say. “Yoe would not let us die; whet yon are doing U sot for the purpose of destruction but for correction.” _ V.IJ. “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and ednst not look on iniquity; wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and boldest thy tongue when the wicked devoured the mab that » more righteow than he? 1 ’ Here the prophet raises a moral question; how could he allow the more wicked nation to succumb to the one not so wicked? V.l. “I will stand upon my watch and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say to me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved." The language is probably figurative. As a watchman watches from a tower, so the prophet spiritually is alert to receive God's message. V. 2. “And the Lord answered me. and said, Write the vision and make it plain upon the tables, that be may run that readeth.” The revelation which the prophet was about to receive was so important that it was wise to have it permanently recorded. V. 3. “For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie; though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it rill not tarry." God often answers prayers in the future; but it is well for people to know wbat justice will be duly administered. V. 4. “Behold his soul which is lifted up is hot upright in him; but the just shall liver by bis faith.” Proud souls are not upright. That the just shall live by faith is the pearl of this lesson. Some 3,000 students enrolled for elective Bible courses at 45 public high echobls in North Carolina during the 1953-54 year. « Fewer persons were killed in course of their employment during 1954 than in any of the 18 years for which records are available. The work-death total for 1954 decreased 7 percent from the total , Os 1953. The number of foreign missionaries in India, according to E. Stanley Jones, has risen sharply since the end of World War II from about 3,000 to almost double that number. This, he says, has worried some Indians who are sensitive about their new freedom and national independence. Jones predicted that the number of foreigners doing mission work in India ultimately will be cut back to the pre-war figure of 3,000, or possibly less.
