Milk For Children Program Expanding Program In School / Will Be Expanded WASHINGTON (INS) — Th* agriculture department said today the program to increase milk consumption by school children was a big success last year and will be expanded when schools reopen in the fall. Despite a lata start, the “drink more milk,’’ campaign paid off with handsome dividends to the students as well as to the surplus burdened dairy industry. School milk consumption " increased'by a full 25 percent and agriculture undersecretary True D. Morse said: “We believe the program has an even greater po-_ tential for good. “With improvements •growing out of this year’s experience, ■4md with a full school year’s operation' next year, the special school milk program is certain to do an even better job of making more milk available to our school children.” The program was set up last summer by congress, which also appropriated 100 million dollars to carry it through two school years. , As stated in the act, the purpose is “to increase consumption of fluid milk by children in nonprofit schools of high school grade and under.” During the first school year. Just ended, the program was extended to 47,000 schools throughout the country and 100 million quarts of milk were distributed. Operation is similar tp that of the school lunch program. Schools buy milk from local dairies and are reimbursed by the federal government for a part of the cost. The maximum rate of repayment is four cents per halt pint tor schools which participated in the previous year and three cents for those which did not . To participate, non-profit schools must agree to serve fluid white milk —which may be “flavored”— meeting state and local standards for butterfat content and sanitation. & School officials are given wide authority in administration since the law recognizes that local circumstances largely determine how milk consumption by students may be most effectively increased. The department has suggested that milk might be served at recess or the first thing in the morning before classes start. At lunch, the size of the serving could be larger or the students could be encouraged to drink as many half pints of mHk as they w-ant. Greater consumption of milk by school children will mean both immediate and long range benefits for them as well as for the dairy industry. For the children, the benefits come in the form of good health bolstered by a plentiful supply of the most nearly perfect of all foods. —' For the industry, it means fuller use of surpluses and current production plus the beginning of a milk drinking habit among boys and girls that will assure active and expanding markets tor dairy products in future years.
