Parental Faith In Vaccine Unshaken Hoosiers Awaiting Release Os Vaccine INDIAN APOUS (INS) — Indication* that parental faith in Salk polio vaccine remains unshaken by political football status of the new product came from Indiana today. 1 -One of the state’s 92 counties conducted a re-check of parents of first and second grade children to determine if they still wish their youngsters to get second shots of the vaccine whenever it becomes available. - An exact count of the number of second round slips signed by parents was not available today, but Mrs. Ethel Pooler, superintendent of school nurses for Indianapolis and Marion county, said the reaction has been favorable. She explained:

"T Wouldn’t give a guess as to the number of slips signed for second shots. Many have been left In school buildings in designated spots, but 1 do know the school nurses say the response was favorable. My phone calls also indicate the, general public has not reacted adversely." Also. Edgar Britton, state representative sos the National Foundation for Infantile , Paralysis, which sponsored the free inoculation program for first and second graders, said reports from county chairmen indicate interest In getting second shots. He said a number of parents before leaving for vacations made arrangements to receive collect telegrams or telephone calls from their local NFIP chairman whenever a date is set for second round shots. He recalled one Instance in which parents of children, now in California on vacation, plan to get shot number two. The first round shots went to 197.167 children in Indiana, for an average participation of 90 per
cent of the total number of children eligible. Britton said Lake county was highest, with 98.6 per cqnt. Big grass roots question today was when will vaccine for second round shots be available? In Marion county, the question loomed man size since this is the only county to set a deadline sot beginning second round shots. The deadline is June 20. Another meeting of the local medical polio committee is expected to be called if no vaccine is available by that date to again re-examine the question of whether to give second shots during summer months. Britton expressed hope that the next release of vaccine by the national institute* of health would be large enough to include Indiana. The order by which the states obtain supplies of vaccine tor the free immunization program is determined by national NFIP officials in accordance with the onslaught of the states’ polio season. Britton discounted any hope that surplus left from shipments of the

vaccine sent by Eli Lilly A Company, of Indianapolis,; to other states could be utilized for the second Hoosier round. Statistical indications are that as much of bOO.OOO cubic centimeters of the vaccine serirto 16 states in April were not used as of May 21. Surgeon general Leonard A. Scheele has • reported that as of that date. 2.514,000 cubic centimeters of Lilly vaccine was administered. almost half of the total 5,394,000 shots given under the NFIP program. The company had shipped nearly 600,000 ccs more than that to the states, but Britton explained that for practical reasons, surplus supplies /would be used for second round shots in the states which now have the extra vaccine on hand and under refrigeration. Detroit — More motor vehicles in the U. S. are being scrapped each year than were being constructed and put on the market each year up to and including 1915.
Give Driving Tips For Safer Holiday National Council Warning On Speed ■pm*-*--- •wr’xe* CHICAGO — What is the death rate in thia country? Your own speedometer may give you the an* swer. That advice to motorists who try to drive too far too fast on holidays was issued by the national safety council, which is coordinating a nationwide campaign aimed, at reducing traffic accidents over the Fourth of July -weekend. One hundred and sixty national organizations are participating in the campaign. The council estimates that more than 40 million vehicles "will be on the move during the three-day weekend and that they will roll up more than three billion miles. In such heavy traffic a driver
is never more than a second away from an accident, the council says. It is estimated that he must make from 20 to 50 decisions an hour — and a wrong one can be fatal. Over the Memorial day weekend, 368 persons were killed in traffic accidents. “If they had died in a nationwide epidemic the whole country would be taking frantic steps to see that it never happened again,” Ned H. Dearborn, president of the council, said. "But they did die from an epidemic — a highway epidemic we might call the three Ts’—incompetence, indifference and irresponsibility! “Their deaths are a tragic reminder that too many of us have forgotten to use the Golden Rule in traffic. When we share a common highway, we are our brother’s keeper in a very real sense. I believe the Memorial Day toll could have been cut in half if that attitude had prevailed more generally.” For a safer Fourth, the council offers four driving tips: ' 1. Start early, before traffic is heavy. You can cover a lot of miMs in relatively light traffic early in the day. 2. Don’t compete in traffic — let the other fellow go first. 3. Don’t follow the car ahead too closely. Double check before .passing or changing lanes.
