S. soil conservation service. C. E. Swain, state conservationist for SCS, says that more than 710,000 acres of land formerly in crop production have been used tor subdivisions, industrial expansion, roads, parks, airports, and other private and public uses during the past ten years. This is the same as the removal from cultivation of all the crop land from about five average Indiana, counties during this 10-year period. "Every mile of four-lane highway constructed through rural areas takes at least 40 acres of farm land out of agricultural use," Swain explained. "Subdivisions, suburban country homes, shopping centers and industrial sites are taking large blocks of land around almost every city and town. Because it is more economical to build such facilities as streets, sewer and water systems on level land, the best crop land is often preferred to less valuable land for industrial and residential developments." . The survey was conducted in all counties in the state and acre of crop land withdrawn for both private and public developments for each &-year period tor the past 15 years were determined. County agents, agricultural committees, highway department, soil conservation district supervisors, and other county, city and town officials provided the information to complete the studies. In addition’ to this reduction of crop land that is taking place, the soil surveys show' that aq additional 575,000 acres of land now in cultivation in the state should be laMn-.ffltt St W? and ip. is land thuirt *js either too sleep, badly eroded or the type of soil that cannot be continued in cultivation without serious deterioration and loss. - More than 22,600 farmers are now cooperating with the 68-soil conservation districts in the state, Swain reports, and are planning and carrying out sound soil and water conservation practices on the 3,250,000 acres they own or operate. Many other farmers are carrying out similar needed practices with the assistance of other agricultural programs and agencies.
